The Shakes Lyrics
Found money and fame
But I found them really late
So in my mansion I'd sit
Waiting for it all to end
My material, my friends
I made lots of friends
I made lots and lots of friends
And on me did they depend
See the horror on my face
I can finally leave this place
Over Blue Star Moonbeam Trace
I can't remember my address ...
But I found them really late
So in my mansion I'd sit
Waiting for it all to end
My material, my friends
I made lots and lots of friends
And on me did they depend
I can finally leave this place
Over Blue Star Moonbeam Trace
I can't remember my address ...

What a depressing song. Although one might see this as Bradford writing a song about himself (and he can apparently relate to the lyrics), he wrote the song as a narrative about someone else.
He stated this in a recent Pitchfork interview: " I was really afraid that song would be taken as autobiographical-- I thought it was really strange that the first lines on the record were "found money and fame," with my picture on the cover. But I wrote that as a narrative about someone else. Still, I can honestly relate to that character very much. People roll their eyes and say, "Oh god, he's not rich or famous." I say it's relative. I mean, look at me: I'm 115 pounds and I grew up without money. To me, I'm rich because I don't have to worry about paying rent. I don't think about money now."

Yeah pretty depressing song alright! The narrator is looking back and reflecting on his life and lamenting on his 'friends' which could be interpreted as material posessions rather than 'real' people and literal friendships. In his pursuit for 'money and fame' he has ended up with nothing but emptiness even though he is trying to convince himself he is surrounded by people that care about him even though he's in denial:
"I made lots of friends I made lots and lots of friends And on me did they depend"
