Glowing Eyes Lyrics
We all are stranger creatures than when we all started out as kids,
Culture forbids,
We have romantic fantasies about what dying truly is,
To fall off the grid.
We live for the night's decor,
It reveals what we dream of.
I know there's someone at the door,
They called for help, of this I'm sure,
But do I want to say goodbye to all the glowing eyes,
I'm holding on to what I know,
And what I know, I must let go,
But I would rather play a song for the eyes to sing along.
We all know somebody who knows somebody who's doing great,
I know some people who know people who are flying straight,
But I'll kindly enter into rooms of depression,
While ceiling fans and idle hands will take my life again.
We live for the night's decor,
It reveals what we dream of.
I know there's someone at the door,
They called for help, of this I'm sure,
But do I want to say goodbye to all the glowing eyes,
I'm holding on to what I know,
And what I know, I must let go,
But I would rather play a song for the eyes to sing along.
This room is far too dark for us to stay around,
Redemption's not that far and darkness is going down.
Make them stop.
I'm holding on to what I know,
And what I know, I must let go,
But I would rather play a song for the eyes to sing along.
Culture forbids,

The "someone at the door" is responsibility. It could be his own personal health, mental state, spiritual development, outside obligations, or really anything. Whatever is at the door is in need of attention, but he is too engrossed in his own thoughts and torments. He likes to entertain them, either in just a figure of speech sort of way (entertain a thought) or possibly through the songs that he sings.
Basically the metaphor is that he locks himself up in a house of negative thoughts and shuts out the world.
The song as a whole represents the struggle he is facing when trying to be "who he is" vs who society wants him to be . first stanza We all are stranger creatures than when we all started out as kids Culture forbids We have romantic fantasies about what dying truly is Fall off the grid This is basically saying that when we are born we are all different people, a toddler really doesn't care what other toddlers think of them. He then goes on to say that culture, aka society, forbids this difference, it longs for everyone to conform. second stanza We live for the night's decor It reveals what we dream of The night is decorated by dreams, our subconscious thoughts, which is who we REALLY are, our subconscious cannot fake, our dreams reveal who we really are, and who we long to be. chorus I know there's someone at the door They called for help, of this I'm sure But do I want to say goodbye to all the glowing eyes I'm holding on to what I know And what I know, I must let go But I would rather play a song for the eyes to sing along Glowing eyes represents society , or everyone around him, everyone is always watching. The person at the door is the real him, and he is faced with the decision to be the real him , who he longs to be, or say goodbye to the glowing eyes, friends and people. He knows he should let go of the glowing eyes and be the real him, but he would rather stay and sing along with them, conform to society. next stanza This room is far too dark for us to stay around Redemption's not that far and darkness is going down The dark room is the fake him, and he can see that redemption, becoming who he really is isn't that far away, and when he reaches towards it the room seems to become lighter. next stanza We all know somebody who knows somebody who's doing great I know some people who know people who are flying straight But I'll kindly enter into rooms of depression While ceiling fans and idle hands will take my life again * The people who are doing great are the people who are being themselves , and when the song says "we all know somebody who knows somebody" it represents the rarity of these people who are being true to themselves.
Then by saying "But I'll kindly enter in" it shows the willingness of this person to enter depressing rooms, but rooms where he accepted nonetheless. Curling fans and idle hands show that he is not really himself in these rooms, and the fake him takes the life of the real him.
When the song says make then stop, it is representing a chorus of glowing eyes, society, singing along to a song that this man's fake self has written , and he wants more than anything for the eyes to stop singing and let him be who he wants to be.

@DrDoctorDoo I'm completely worn out and exhausted on trying to find another persons perspective on this song that lived up to its brilliance and uniqueness... Just about gave up. Have to sleep now but would like to ask you a few questions. You're far beyond my comprehension level. And I'm so tired I can barely see straight right now but I'd really like to discuss this song and other TOP if you're interested...? Or any music at all. It's such a passion of mine. Hope to hear back. - Jen I'm on Facebook my email is suffer6277@gmail.com Thanks!

i find all the comments right with their opinions:the glowing eyes are his dark thoughts and he is entertaining them while the someone at the door can be hid family,God/faith or life.
But what i thought when i first heard this song(an year ago) is that the glowing eyes represent his fans, the clique.Their eyes must be glowing from hope or the will to live.He is finding comfort with them but the somone at the door must be his own responsibilities or his own mental health. This means tyler is trying to fix others but he is forgetting to fix his own self and as he is finding comfort near the eyes/fans he want to keep being with them amd sing to them. This can be imagined as a concert:he is singing to all the eyes forgetting his own self and the eyes are singing back to him. Also the first stanza can be the song he is singing to the eyes. The stanza "the room is too dark for us to stay around, redemption's not that far and darkness is going down' can show his success in growing hope for the eyes.I also want to point out that the 'La da da da' has also been mentioned in tyler's 'Before you start your day' which played as lullaby or a tune to comfort someone and as it is present in this song too,it can show that tyler is comforting his fans or particularly all the depressed people. The verse which states that he enters the room of depression can be the room he is in now with all the other people but he is consoling them but fails to console himself and he can purposely enter that tom just to save those people. In the last verse he understands his mistake of staying in the room with the eyes because his depression is getting worse trying to console others.
@weirdestweirdo I actually had a similar interpretation as you did. The someone at the door seems to be his own priorities and health (mental and physical) but he's choosing to neglect them in order to sing to the glowing eyes, the fans, because he knows they feel the same depression he does/did and he wants to help. Even at the expense of himself.

Just my interpretation but I felt the last verse was actually about making the fans stop feeling this way. He is determined to help his fans with his music, because he cares deeply for them. Kind...

This song is clearly about his depression. Basically all of his are. He wants to be better, he no longer wants to be sad anymore, (and what I know I must let go) but "he is holding onto what he knows". Without his depression, he feels almost like an entirely different person, like he is missing something. So instead of letting his depression consume him, he wants to find a way to channel it, this can be different for many people, but he makes it into song. Instead of completely relinquishing his depression, he'd rather turn it into something else, so he makes songs where his depression escapes through. I understand this emotion completely, as why it is my favorite song.
He knows he needs to let go of his demons but it's what he's become and it's seems hard but he knows it's wrong.
I think "someone at the door" is his responsibilities and they need attention, but he wants to stay in his state of depression, as he refers to as "glowing eyes." He knows that he should be happy and that he is completely capable, but he wants to stay depressed.
And I think he's saying that if he gets a little less depressed, he'll try to stay the most depressed as possible, so he'll play a sad song "for the eyes to sing along" or in other words, stay depressed.
I think he's also saying that he knows people that are happy and their life is way better than his, so he get jealous and would rather think of ways to take his life than to think about how much better their life is than his life.
ignore the weird slashes, my computer is messed up
ignore the weird slashes, my computer is messed up
Seems to be describing a type of cancer, like the sparkle in a baby’s eye in a photo. But metaphorically...the cancer of the soul; living is what’s killing us all, slowly like a cancer and it shows like a glowing ring around the pupil in the eyes.
I feel that he is speaking of depression. He knows that he should get better, but doing so would put him out of his comfort zone. He's become accustomed to his own sadness. Someone who has never dealt with this may not understand it; but when you feel this way, youre not thinking as yourself. You may feel like you dont deserve to recieve help, or that its easier to stay depressed and avoid all of the pills, therapists, etc. Also, a lot of troubled artists feel that their issues help them to be creative, and that treatment may take that away from them.
