Maybe it's bricks and mortar now, whether or not they run it down
I don't want anything to shake that shape away
No one told us which way to come, nobody mapped oblivion
So I go growing roses in disarray
Just like most, falling head in
'Til my ghost fills the bed in
So lift it up like a banner
Hold it up over me
If this war is never ending
I'll take this love down with me
Like a banner
I don't need fate to give it time, it doesn't toke pain to change your
Mind no weapon con sever the soul from me not the sorceress, not the money
All my cleverness, all my cunning so lift up like a banner
Hold it up over me if this war is never ending
I'll take this love down with me
Like a banner
It's around me in my surroundings
It counts me when it starts the counting
In the chaos there is a standard
I'm carrying it like a banner
So lift it up like a banner
Hold it up over me
If this war is never ending
I'll take this love down with me
I don't want anything to shake that shape away
No one told us which way to come, nobody mapped oblivion
So I go growing roses in disarray
'Til my ghost fills the bed in

I absolutely love your interpretation! Amazing!

I was thinking more of the 'heroism' thing - that we should do things according to our morals, and don't let anything negative control us and guide us in the wrong direction.

This song is so symbolic, I love it :)

Thank you!
I like your interpretation about heroism too. You can really get that kind of meaning, especially with the banner, bricks and mortar, war and love. It's cool that we can get different interpretations out of the same song. :)

@skyla10998 Where did anyone mention Christianity in this comment thread? I\'m not even religious...and I don\'t push any ideas on anyone.

I don't know if I was the only one who caught the Elder Scrolls reference, but when you're in Oblivion, there's no accurate map to help guide you. You're kind of left on your own to find the sigil stone and close the oblivion gate. Anyway, that's what I caught from the song. Yeah for nerdy references!
I noticed that! :)

Didn't notice until now! That's awesome! I love how she embraces the nerdy side of herself and has that play a part in her music. So cool :D

Reminds me of Pslam 20:5 "We will shout for joy when you are victorious and will lift up our banners in the name of our God."
She's a Christian, and i can definitely see this song as being inspired by her faith.
@gravityhappens OMG I didn't even think of that. I love it!

I think that there are MANY interpretations of this song.
Firstly, a 'banner' could be many things: It could be a white banner which means surrendering It could be a banner of protest; standing up for what you believe in and fighting for it It could be a banner symbolising peace, which also goes back to the idea of surrendering It could also be a metaphorical banner, one which shows a change in someone's life. Like if someone wishes to change their life for the better good.
Secondly, 'nobody mapped Oblivion' is clearly an Elder Scrolls reference. Evidence that this could be true is that I've seen LIGHTS tweeting about both Oblivion and Skyrim.
It is also clear that this is a song about standing up for what you believe in, which also goes back to my point about protest.
Oblivion is hell in Skyrim. Doubt that line is a reference to hell.
Oblivion is hell in Skyrim. Doubt that line is a reference to hell.
It could ave any meaning depending on how the person relates to the song, that's what makes it such an amazing song. c: I personally feel the lyrics are about having strength, and ambition to do what's right.
And also, in the music video she is carrying a white banner
The song is about Love. LIGHTS stated in a video that "this song itself is about love essentially." [1]
Thus, the banner symbolizes the power of love. By lifting up the banner, she declares that love will see her through when her world is in chaos. In the music video, when the banner was lifted up, the fighting stopped. She relies on this banner of love, such that even "if this war is never ending, I'll take this love down with me."
So whether things are getting better ("bricks and mortar now"), or whether things get worse ("they run it down"), she lifts up the banner of love.
So what is this 'love' that she means? It could be her own love for others, or others' love for her.
Interestingly she uses the words "standard" and "banner". Since she is a Christian, she would have heard the phrase "his banner over me is love", which is taken from the Bible [2] and a popular hymn [3]. She likely refers to the banner as God's love for her.
The lyrics "In the chaos there is a standard" seem to be referred from the Bible too. Another popular verse from the Bible reads "When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him" [4]. This statement sounds just like the song. Probably she is announcing that in her hard times, God will protect her.
Some might disagree about the Christian ideas, but whether she meant the song in a Christian sense or not, the core meaning remains. The song is still about love being her strength during her toughest moments, whether the love from herself, her family and friends, or in her God.

@IsraelChua That is incredible insight. I have never been a heavy study when it comes to the Bible, and I'm glad a few of you were (@gravityhappens). SO beautiful! Thank you!
