Chapel Song Lyrics

Well there goes my girl
Into the chapel
Now she's walking down the aisle
And it feels just like a mile

And I shake shake shake like a leaf
And I'm lyin' lyin' lyin' through my teeth
I got a pocket full of handshakes
And it don’t mean nothin’

There goes my girl
Into the chapel
Now she's walking down the aisle
And her man begins to smile

And I shake shake shake like a leaf
And I'm lyin' lyin' lyin' through my teeth
I'm a bowl of bruised fruit
Inside a chapel of shiny apples

Tear up the photograph!
Cause it's a bright blue sky
Tear up the photograph!
Cause it's a bright blue sky

Tear up the photograph!
Cause it's a bright blue sky
Tear up the photograph!
Cause it's a bright blue sky

It's just a bright blue sky
It's just a bright blue sky

This song seems to be about watching the girl of your dreams get married to another man. Tearing up the photograph could mean trying to get rid of the memories you had together because she is so happy with someone else.

I agree with hollypatonmorris, it also seems to me that this is about a father :

I got a pocket full of handshakes --> people shake hands for congratulations ; it is customary to congratulate the parents rather than the ex-boy/girlfriends at a wedding.

I'm a bowl of bruised fruit / Inside a chapel of shiny apples --> The bride and the groom start their life together, your daughter getting married is rather at the end on the wedding timeline (getting married, having kids, raising them, having them leave the nest, enjoying the grandkids and growing old).

Tear up the photograph! / Cause it's a brand new sky --> Moving on

But nowhere is it said that the groom doesn't seem right. I only see the pain of a father "losing" his daughter to another man.

I always saw this from the point of view of a father giving his daughter away to someone he thinks is the wrong man, or perhaps just reflecting on the pain of letting your child move away from you.

My Interpretation

I thought the same thing as sjwasian, but the handshake part did throw me off. It makes more sense to think that this song's about a father watching his daughter get married. It's a bittersweet day.

They've said it's about lost love so watching a past love (perhaps the love of your life, that you lost) get married make sense.

Indeed, this song is about lost love. The girl getting married was his true love and he had to learn how to let the notion of being with her again go. Hence, "Tear up the photograph, 'Cause it's a bright blue sky".

The whole "pocket full of handshakes" line could still be in line with the perspective of being at the wedding of your lost love. I take it as maybe shaking hands with all the people at the wedding that you once knew and saw all the time while dating this "lost love?" Say, her family and friends that you once knew.

Same with "I'm a bowl of bruised fruit / Inside a chapel of shiny apples," could mean that inside he is torn while every one else at the wedding is happy for the occasion?

Just my take on it all..

It's about a lost love and is based on a real person. I know this for a fact because my son is in the band and the writer, Billy, is a friend.
