Tiny Monsters Lyrics
Day gives way to night
On the storefront mannequin
The audience with Mona Lisa grins
Moonlight builds emotion
As the players scuttle in
Pull the curtain back and let the show begin
Moon of mischief
Under low light discipline
Hear the tiny monsters hunt the harlequin
Silent patrons view the drama
Under low light discipline
Hear the tiny monsters hunt the harlequin
Moon of mischief
We kill, be killed, or run
To be, or not to be, beyond the dawn
On the storefront mannequin
The audience with Mona Lisa grins
As the players scuttle in
Pull the curtain back and let the show begin
Under low light discipline
Hear the tiny monsters hunt the harlequin
Under low light discipline
Hear the tiny monsters hunt the harlequin
We kill, be killed, or run
To be, or not to be, beyond the dawn

I'm not entirely sure. But my first impression of this is Theater, obviously. Namely a Shakespearean play (To be or not to be beyond the dawn....definitely Shakespeare influenced.)
Harlequins were also Shakespearean for jokers or jesters. I know Maynard spent a lot of time at an arts college, so I'm sure he has a great love for the theater (it's quite obvious really).
This just evokes the feeling of being in an audience, watching the "Tiny Monsters" (actors, they look tiny to you because you're so far back in the audience...) "hunt for harlequins" (trying to get laughs or reactions from the audience.)
Also, it's Moon Of Mischief, not Lunar Mischief.
But I figured since people are just re-posting the lyrics, i'd give my 2 cents on what I actually think this song means...to me at least. The good thing about Maynard's lyrics are that they're so mutable and open to interpretation.
i love milla jovovich's vocals :) shes great
Pretty sure it's Carina Round singing in this track

I believe maynard is giving us the perspective of the mannequins in the storefront. Nightfall comes around and the criminals from the neighborhood (the players/tiny monsters) come out. The harlequins is a meaning for clowns, in this case the innocent and unknowing pedestrians. The lyrics are not hump but hunt the harlequins. We kill be killed or run this decision makes us" to be not not to be". A very theater inspired song from a unique perspective. Thank you Maynard.
It's a view on the scene surrounding Lady Gaga and her "little monsters". In the correct lyrics, "Harlequin" is singular.
So I'm finally realizing what this song is about. I still can't believe it's taken me nearly 2 years since album release to finally understand but better late than never, right?
Anyways, this song is about the desert creatures that inhabit the landscape at night. Coming out scurrying the desert. Hunting for food etc. The mannequins is the audience in a storefront window watching the drama unfold before them through the window glass.
And that's my take on this song. Nothing more, nothing less.
It feels like an analogy for Celebrity Worship and the way it's built up into something hideous as the planet continues to get "smaller".
Day gives way to night on the storefront mannequins The audience with Mona Lisa grins"
The song brings to mind the Renaissance, times of emerging art. It sets the stage for the world, grinning confident that it has inspired and uplifted our world.
But we're still just animals in some of our behaviors, aren't we. Soon, far from true enlightenment [we're still just chasing currency; we're territorial and violent]. We haven't been inspired and Celebrity Worship and Reality Television replaces the great arts as old.
The masses watch on obsessed as Paris Hilton and Snookie debase themselves for status and wealth, the drama is tantalizing.
The Celebrity's battle back and forth to be the most obscene. It's pretty relevant in early 2014 where Miley Cirus and Justin Beiber; the latest in waves of stories of Celebrities escalating from general havoc into minor crimes, poisoning the weak minded and embarrassing us all, not to be outdone.
For me, this is about the experience of having your life turn upside down, and what comes after. Feeling like an empty shell of what used to be, while looking out the window at life passing by. Peers watching and waiting for the drama to unfold, while their reflections bring on the tide. This state of chaos brings on tempting voices seeking a thrill. We kill the ego, let it kill us, or run to temporary comfort. Act or be acted upon. In the rebirth will we fall again or rise above...
My 1st interpretation ✌️
Apocalypse Begins, players scuffle in. Why would an audience be watching mannequins? The Watchers. \n\nHunt for Harlequins: looking for Magdalena, the Harlot in Revelations 17. \n\nSilence patience view the drama: They\'re silently watching, patiently waiting and not interfering (low light discipline). \n\nThe possible outcomes for the moon causing mischief: must kill to live, or be killed, or run \nThere\'s eternity and nothing, and time living between.
