Really don't mind if you sit this one out
My words but a whisper your deafness a shout
I may make you feel but I can't make you think
Your sperm's in the gutter, your love's in the sink
So you ride yourselves over the fields and
You make all your animal deals and
Your wise men don't know how it feels
To be thick as a brick
And the sand-castle virtues are all swept away in
The tidal destruction, the moral melee
The elastic retreat rings the close of play
As the last wave uncovers the newfangled way
But your new shoes are worn at the heels and
Your suntan does rapidly peel and
Your wise men don't know how it feels
To be thick as a brick
And the love that I feel, is so far away
I'm a bad dream that I just had today and you
Shake your head and
Say it's a shame
Spin me back down the years
And the days of my youth
Draw the lace and black curtains
And shut out the whole truth
Spin me down the long ages, let them sing the song
My words but a whisper your deafness a shout
I may make you feel but I can't make you think
Your sperm's in the gutter, your love's in the sink
So you ride yourselves over the fields and
You make all your animal deals and
Your wise men don't know how it feels
To be thick as a brick
And the sand-castle virtues are all swept away in
The tidal destruction, the moral melee
The elastic retreat rings the close of play
As the last wave uncovers the newfangled way
But your new shoes are worn at the heels and
Your suntan does rapidly peel and
Your wise men don't know how it feels
To be thick as a brick
And the love that I feel, is so far away
I'm a bad dream that I just had today and you
Shake your head and
Say it's a shame
Spin me back down the years
And the days of my youth
Draw the lace and black curtains
And shut out the whole truth
Spin me down the long ages, let them sing the song

I bought a special edition of "thick as a brick" and there is an interview with ian anderson. He says this song is a spoof, designed to mock rock star arrogance, and artistic self-centeredness. its sheer length, and jumbled lyrics that dont seem to have anything with each other, is because they don't. Thick as a brick originally was going to originally be a normal multi-track album. Ian anderson was annoyed by other "prog" rock musicians trying to be smart, but ultimatly falling flat on their faces looking like fools. Rick wakemen of Yes, personally comes to mind, in "the filth and the fury"the sex pistols documentary, he is seen playing a piano with a paint roller! also to accompany his concept album "Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table" he staged a fully orchestrated Musical on Ice!
So in conclusion Lyrics = almost Meaningless in this song length = along with the lyrics show rock arrogance Rick Wakemen = Moron
Tull kicks ass and so does Yes (roundabout is the best!)
I agree and disagree. I think Ian was smart enough to have it both ways. His album art sort of seems to lampoon the rock opera concept, but that far, far from extrapolates to the idea that the lyrics lack significance. I remember a teen college freshman who planned to write a paper for a class in which he would claim the lyrics were utterly meaningless. In retrospect, this dovetails with a much more facile explanation of that conclusion; that the kid was a greenass freshman with little exposure to the world of ideas and philosophies.

But I still very, very much appreciate your shedding light on the idea that Ian was having a healthy poke at the genre. I love it when Brit rockers did that, like Viv Stanshall's scathing "Can a Blue Man Sing the Whites?", making fun of the Brit blues players, like Clapton.
