Buried in Water Lyrics

Like a lamb to its slaughter
Buried in water

Down
Under the ground
There's a town there
I've been down there
In the middle of the lake
I hold your hand for goodness' sake

When the women and the kids are asleep
The walls there
And the skin of the sheep
So lock all the windows and doors
The Devil's coming for you and yours

Love was all that it could give
But it died so other towns could live
They don't bury bodies from the drowned
But they drowned our little town

Like a lamb to his slaughter
Buried in water
Buried in water

Buried in water

When the leaves
go floating away
in the pale moonlight of day
bury anchors in our ghosts
and we can let our heartbeats go

Love was all that it could give
But it died so other towns could live
They don't bury bodies from the drowned
But they drowned our little town

Love was all that it could give
But it died so other towns could live
They don't bury bodies from the drowned
But they drowned our little town

We're like the lambs to its slaughter
Buried in water
Buried in water
Buried in water

I think its actually "The wolves there in the skin of the sheep" and "bury anchors in our ghosts" sounds right.

This is my favorite song from the album, its absolutely stunning and haunting.

i agree completely with the wolves line, its a biblical reference to Matthew 7:15“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

two things. i think it's "the wolves tear in the skin of the sheep", makes a lot more sense. and in the end is "pale moonlight of day"

This song seems to go hand-in-hand with the movie "Lost River", directed by Ryan Gosling, a member of Dead Man's Bones. As for the meaning of the lyrics, I cannot say, but the town mentioned in the song seems to parallel a town that was flooded when a dam was destroyed. The main character leaves his mother and his younger sibling behind as he ventures out onto the water during the night to dive down to the town below. Perhaps the "Devil" in the song is referencing Matt Smith's character, Bully.

My Interpretation

I think they lyrics are 'The wolf's there, in the skin of a sheep' and 'Love was all that it could give, But it died so other towns could live They un-buried bodies from the ground, when they drowned our little town'. I think there are a lot of parallels with the film Lost River, and it's about the idea of a town sacrificing itself for the good of others, and how the dead bodies in the graveyards literally started to surface as the earth got waterlogged, hence the line 'bury anchors in our ghosts, so we can let our heartbeats go' - the spirits of the bodies need to be laid to rest once again so their loved ones can be at peace.
