Be Still And Know Lyrics
In this struggle Are we dead or alive?
Freedom is not existence It's why we survive
Shake our grief Hold on to belief
It can't enslave us forever There is relief
No change will be permanent
Our strength enduring Bright incandescent
Take a chance before we fall Our Backs against the wall
And the sun will rise
Dawn will break through the blackest night
Distant in its glow
This shall pass be still and know
And there's heartache As we search to connect
Even just for a moment Pretend We're content
There is love Know that we are one
We are all in this together Weather the storm
Look into each other's eyes
Make the connection before it dies
It will all disseminate As we consummate
Is it hopeless? Will the fear take control?
Don't succumb to the numbing Sting of defeat
Take this hate Let the bile stagnate
Hoist the head of Goliath Bask in its grace
Stars realign in the sky
Glaciers will melt and the oceans rise
Waves will come crashing ashore But withstand the roar
Freedom is not existence It's why we survive
Shake our grief Hold on to belief
It can't enslave us forever There is relief
No change will be permanent
Our strength enduring Bright incandescent
Take a chance before we fall Our Backs against the wall
Dawn will break through the blackest night
Distant in its glow
This shall pass be still and know
Even just for a moment Pretend We're content
There is love Know that we are one
We are all in this together Weather the storm
Look into each other's eyes
Make the connection before it dies
It will all disseminate As we consummate
Don't succumb to the numbing Sting of defeat
Take this hate Let the bile stagnate
Hoist the head of Goliath Bask in its grace
Stars realign in the sky
Glaciers will melt and the oceans rise
Waves will come crashing ashore But withstand the roar

"Be still and know" is a quote from Jewish and Christian bibles from Psalm 46:10. Phil Demmel has a tattoo of it on his arm, as his grandmother taught it to him when he was young which makes it one of his favorites.
"And the sun will rise, dawn will break from blackest (darkest Jewish version) night." Again from both bibles. God promised his people that he will allow the sun to rise on us every single day - as long as we stay true to Him and His laws.
"Distant in its glow, this shall pass be still and know." - We will all be faced with unbearable tragedy - death of loved ones - creating extreme uncertainty regarding our faith - whatever it may be.
Rob Flynn is an extraordinary intelligent human being, and all very intelligent people have an immense struggle within themselves regarding their faith. They are subjected to constant scrutiny, they are made fun of and mocked by unbelievers, they are made to feel stupid. It would be so much easier to just quit and join the others. It would be so easy to just trash everything that our parents and grandparents spent their entire lives teaching us with hopes that we would remain faithful. Its easy to be evil - you just do it.
On the other hand - its extremely hard to be righteous and remain faithful. Its a constant mental battle. Only an immensely strong person can keep his faith these days.
The song reminds us to stay on the path we were guided to- no matter what the circumstances even the coming of the apocalyspe (glaciers, rising oceans, etc)- and stay true to our beliefs.
Flynn uses his exceptional talent to relay the lesson to all using mostly his own words. And, as it is a song, anyone else can interpret it anyway they like.
I think you're exactly right in everything you say. I couldn't have said it better. You hit the nail on the head.

God doesn't expect us to be strong. He doesn't want us to try to be strong. He wants us to be humble. He wants us to give up the fight and realize that we can never, ever measure up and do it on our own. He wants us to give Him our burden and He wants to take ours.

The Law was never meant to be lived up to. Jesus Christ came not abolish the Law but to fulfill it. JESUS was the immensely strong person on our behalf so we don't have to. By GRACE we are saved through FAITH in what JESUS has done. Hallelujah! Amen!
Accept what Jesus has done for us. Only - only - through Him will you find true freedom and rest.
Awesome explanation! So do you think these guys are believers?

@FullArmor - I think they are believers. Since their first album, they have had quite a few songs with passages from the bible, and in several songs Rob seems to be pleading with God.

love this song!
"It's about struggle, and overcoming struggle, and knowing that the light at the end of the tunnel is only there if that light shines inside of you", explains guitarist Phil Demmel."
Wasn't too sure what this one was about until I heard this part of the song:
"Stars realign in the sky Glaciers will melt and the oceans rise Waves will come crashing ashore But withstand the roar"
I think it could be about the apocalypse, not the end of the world but possibly the end of the world as we know it. The chorus means that there will be crazy shit going on but humanity will survive.
"We are all in this together Weather the storm"
This part means that it will happen and everybody, even counties that are at war with each other, will have to help each other in order to survive.
This is just my opinion though.
The imagery comes from Psalm 46, as does the title of the song.

Psalm 46:1-3 "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling."

This Psalm is telling us no matter what is happening around us, no matter the pain and tragedies we're experiencing, even if the mountains of our life are crumbling to dust and we are being overcome by a raging storm, GOD is in control, GOD is in charge, and GOD's plan is being carried out.
Yes, some things we can't understand, especially when our personal mountains are falling into the sea, but God has a grand plan in which we are exactly where we're supposed to be and in which He works out everything for our ulitmate benefit.
When we are overcome by life's tragedies, when we want to scream or fall on our knees in tears, God reminds us to be still. Be still and know that he is God and he has everything under control.
i think this song is about persevering, and even though life might be tough at times and it seems that its too hard to go on, the sun will always rise and the pain will end.
Phil Demmel in an interview with Sonic Express explained the song meaning as:
"“Be Still in Know” which is, uh, kind of a few riffs that I threw together that kind of got shelved for a minute, got put away, and got brought back from the dead when I came in one day and those guys were kind of jamming on it. It kind of got some chest compressions, and it got brought back to life. Epic jam. It’s about struggle, and overcoming struggle, and knowing that the light at the end of the tunnel is only there if that light shines inside of you. The title was…Like my grandmother handed down all of her grandchildren bible verses in all their Easter cards and Christmas cards. She used to sign one to each, and mine was Psalm 46, which is, “Be still, and know that I’m the Lord”. Basically, be steadfast. Know that you will get through, and this shall pass. It kind of fit into the tune and kind of fit into the chorus. I mean, I got it tattooed on my arm around eight years ago. So, it’s been kind of my mantra through my life. So, I’m really stoked that Rob chose to title the song that."

Named after a Biblical verse, when asked about the song's meaning, Phil Demmel explained to Sonic Excess how "It's about struggle, and overcoming struggle, and knowing that the light at the end of the tunnel is only there if that light shines inside of you.
