Heavy Rope

Can't believe no one's commented on this song. I just recently saw Lights perform in St. Louis. It was pretty cool. After she sang this song, she mentioned how this song included parts of you that you don't even know exist but just come out in music. Deep shit.

The song is a cry out for help, to someone, something, anything to save you. Like a last, desperate plea for redemption.

This is mostly speaking from personal experience. I think this song is about how we can sometimes feel that we're slowly "falling through the cracks", and we need someone there to save us. We can all come to a pace where we don't know what we're doing anymore, or why. I guess you could use the analogy of wondering away from home, and one day realizing that you're completely lost and want to go back.

Well I think people bullied her for being too skinny and “anorexic” (which is no better than calling someone fat with intentions of hurting their feelings) even though her body is just like that. It’s just how she was born! And she said (somewhere I don't know) that Heavy Rope is about her depression and suicide thoughts.

I'm only now getting into this song, for some reason it didn't stick out to me much on the album at first. It's really good though. It's kind of like Saviour pt 2.

This song... well, first and foremost, if you aren't listening to the acoustic version, you're doing it wrong in my opinion. You don't her the emotions in her voice quite like you do in the original.

It's a story of losing yourself, losing who you are, who you want to be. It's feeling helpless and needing someone to be there, to fix what's broken. It's so beautifully vague that I find whenever I'm in a dark place, for whatever reason, this song articulates my situation and emotions perfectly.

Just imagine the state Lights was in to write this song. Her struggles were so great that she couldn't help herself anymore, and I imagine that there was no one to be her savior. The only she could do was write this song, perhaps with no one specifically in mind, calling out into an abyss for a heavy rope that might not even exist.
