Drive All Night Lyrics

I ain't lookin for a free ride home
Back to the middle
I need a new locale
I need a girl who calls me baby
I need to know if she can save me
I need somewhere I can drive all night
Out into the darkness
Follow the headlights down
I gotta know if they can take me
I gotta know if they can save me

Focus in on every word
Change my path
Maybe I could leave a mark
Try and prove the poets wrong
There must be time
Maybe we could be the song
To march us on

I ain't lookin for a free ride home
Back to the middle
I need a new locale
I need a girl that calls me baby
I need to know if she can save me
I need somewhere I can drive all night
Out into the darkness
Follow the headlights down
I need to know where they can take me
I gotta know if they can save me

Beg the book to turn the page
Cause I get stuck where the villains get away
Somewhere in this wretched tale there must be a line
Where the victim gets his way
Just one time
I'll get mine

I ain't lookin for a free ride home
Back to the middle
I need a new locale
I need a girl that calls me baby
I gotta know if she can save me
I need somewhere I can drive all night
Out into the darkness
Follow the headlights down
I need to know where they can take me
I gotta know if they can save me

Drive all night
Hold on tight
Close your eyes
Say goodbye

Moving on; moving up.

From the first line he indicates he's willing to work for it, if that's what it takes. But it's not going to be easy, and why should it be?

The line about proving the poets wrong reminds me of U2 for some reason: "every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief; all kill their inspiration, then sing about their grief". He defies that conclusion with this song, with fantastic energy and conviction.

When the music breaks in the middle, he reveals his doubt in his faith (because the villians do get away often). But it won't stop him from trying to be a good man, and that's the rub.

Never, ever, ever, give up.

To me it sounds like he's looking for a new beginning and he'll do anything to get to that new beginning.

The book thing can be turned from literal to metaphorical. He's literally stuck in a book where the bad guy just friggin wins and he's too sad to push on into the rest of the book because it's so hard to deal with that the good guy we all root for has tried hard and still the villain got his way.

Metaphorically he can be the guy in the book who was topped by the villain and he's too sad to continue trying so hard. But he decides he's going to push through and get to his part where life gets better for him and triumphs whatever is bad in his life.
