The narrator's lyrics in each of the verses point to a negative outlook on life. Lyrics like:

'say the truth will set you free, but it won't for me' 'i can't help but feel i'm on an island born to sink' 'we can't change who we are, we are all alone'

point to a feeling of hopelessness that the narrator has been viewing life from. At the end of each verse though, 'the devil's been talkin' which represents that these negative thoughts are just what the devil would want us to believe. Basically, take the song in reverse and it is saying don't believe the lies the devil wants us to believe, and the negativity he wants to tear us down with. Be positive.

Wow.... this sounds really really sad... The narration of the song believes they're set aside from the others in a negative way and that they're in hell and even though someone may try to say something positive, they say it won't help them at all. As for the devils been talkin' part... I wonder if it's like the devil whispering in your ear and making you believe terrible things, true or not.

Using the law the devil accuses us of not being worthy, of being sinners who cannot ever be in Gods favor. We sin every day and we can not change that. We try to, we try to save ourselves, but the devil is quick to remind us that we can't.

"there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?" Says Paul in Romans 7: 23-24

Ofcourse there's the good news, the gospel tells us: there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus! But sometimes we forget "the truth will set you free But it won't for me" and "The ship is setting off to sea But it's sailing without me" that's when the devil's been talking.

You are not good enough, you can't change, you are a sinner, you are not worthy, you are alone - all this is true, but NOT for those who belong to Jesus.

In my opinion the song is based on Romans 7 - An essential chapter for every christian.
