I believe this song is about a rebound. He is in need of being with someone right now - which is common after a break up - but is not ready to give love yet. Therefore, he doesn't want to receive love. He just wants things to be uncomplicated, he doesn't want this new person to fall in love with him, just take care of him. The "give me something to eat for I'm weak to my bones" could mean that he wants this person to nurture him with love and care, because he is empty from his previous, broken relationship. "Give me glimmers of hope" means that he wants to feel something, just a little bit.

And he knows he will leave, and he feels awful about having strung this person along, while he cannot give that love back.

I see a sense of nomadic lifestyle, personally.

I resonate with this song a lot because I have a similar lifestyle, and I have always found it difficult to stay in one place for too long, which makes relationships difficult "And when I get tired and eventually leave"

Personally I think that he is just passing by, and he has someone that he is having a fling with, but he is warning them not to fall in love with him, not to develop feelings, to just keep it simple. He even encourages her and tells her, don't forget that you are free.
