Fighting the Gravity Lyrics

This makes no sense

This air is too thick to breathe, so just drive
These eyes are too sick to see, don't leave me behind
Something's swimming in my blood
Something's rotting in my brain
Lungs smothered from the flood
I can't recognize your face
I need to leave, so just drive

Burning Lights on the street, I'm fighting the gravity
When I'm beat and defeated they'll take you away from me
Dead and lost in a dream, this is the last of me
I'm always fighting the gravity

Tonight is too much for me to get through
Tomorrow's just a darkened hall to an empty room
When I'm far away from you

Fighting the gravity might mean fighting something depressing, as gravity pulls one down. Most lines of this song have a symbolic/metaphorical meaning to them, so it would prob make sense to go through each of them in detail, but I'm too lazy ^^ Overall I think the song describes a relationship where one has so much anger towards the other for some reason, that his perception of that person has changed dramatically. Basically he has lost faith in that person and is unable to recognize whatever good he saw before. The way I get his only option is to get away from that person and set his mind on something else, otherwise dwelling further on his anger. This means distancing himself even more from the person he really wants to be close to. Basically it's a fucked up dilemma which leads to frustration and maybe resignation as he cannot make sense of the whole situation. So I think fighting the gravity means fighting the depression resulting from this frustration and also fighting whatever negative feelings towards the other person in the relationship exist.

This has nothing to do with the lyrics, I just wanted to remark that the hrmonies during the 'this makes no sense' parts sound really cool, always give me the chills ^^

Most of what JimboTSoV is right. I directly relate to this song, I am living the meaning of this song right now. The gravity that's spoken of in this song represent the fatal attraction for one of the two persons in the relations. As it makes no sense to fight gravity, it makes no sense for me to get away ad move on from the one I love because she means the world to me and I can't comprehend what's happened for her to have changed so much. She is cold and distant with me and can't see the good she used to see in me. How do you move on from being with someone that at one time adored you and felt exactly the same way as you still feel? It feels impossible like breaking a law of physics. I am every day pulled towards the need to fight for what we had. It is very frustrating. Every night is hard to get through and tomorrow only opens a door to a deep anguishing feeling of solitude. "Dead and lost in a dream" is like dwelling in memories of everything we had it's like it all never happened, surreal. Anyways that's how I feel about this song, it might not be exactly that.

Here are the exact lyrics taken from the booklet in the album

This makes no sense

I think the chorus goes:

Burning lights on the street I'm fightin', fighting the gravity When I'm beat and defeated, they'll take you away from me Dead and lost in a dream This, this is the last of me I'm always fighting the gravity

As for the meaning, I think it's about being hit by a situation you never for saw, like a break up, and you don't know how you will make it through so you're just driving through the streets trying to figure out what is going on. The reason I think it's called "Fighting the Gravity" is because he is "fighting the gravity" of the situation, my English teacher used to always used to say that phrase, "the gravity of the situation."

I think some of the lyrics might be off:

' THIS AIR is too thick to breathe, .. ' ' .. darkened HALL ... '

chorus by AAG12 seems to be right

This song has too much meaning for me, because this is exactly how I feel about a lady that is perfect for me but broke up with me, it makes no sense. The only way I survive it, is by taking my car and going out on the road, and drive fast, so that I don't feel dead inside. No need for me to write how I feel, the songs words says it all.

Official explanation from Mark on a Reddit Q&A:

"fighting the gravity is about a night a long time ago where someone put something in my drink. i had no idea what was happening and thought i was dying. the whole world felt malicious and angry. i could barely move from the immensity of the earth's pull. i got into my girlfriend's car and said, "please, just drive."
