MH 4.18.2011 Lyrics

Coming in, coming in, kill the radio silence
Break down in L.A.
Giving up, giving in, to a feeling of violence
There's hell to pay

So, let's light another match, stop living in the past
when nobody can hear me down
Blow the lock off the cage, watch the children come to age
when their parents stop to take a bow

Nothing takes root in this barren soil
Nothing takes root in this barren soil
Maybe there's no one there at all

Hold on, the worst is yet to come
Save your money for the hired guns
Hold strong, when everything you loved is gone
Slow down, stop living in the shadow of a helicopter

Line em' up, on the wall, coming out with their hands up
Give em' all the chair
Let it burn, let it fall, let the end of the world come
Who's left to care?

Nothing tastes takes root in this barren soil
Nothing tastes root but the pain and toil
Maybe there's no one there at all

Hold on, the worst is yet to come
Save your money for the hired guns
Hold strong, when everything you loved is gone
Slow down, stop living in the shadow of a helicopter

Hold on, the worst is yet to come
Save your money for the hired guns
Hold strong, when everything you loved is gone
Slow down, stop living in the shadow of a helicopter
Stop living in the shadow of a helicopter

4.18.2011 is the day MH (Mark Hoppus) wrote the song. (CBF to find a reference) Most artists write things like that at the top of the page when they write stuff, and the guys decided to leave it just like that on this one.

Like I said I'm not going to scour the internet for a reference, but it was in a magazine at Hot Topic that I happened to pick up... Mark said it himself in an interview.

Song Meaning

He said it in the live chat they did on the UK release date, too. He also said that the "stop living in the shadow of a helicopter" line had a meaning, but he didn't want to say what it was at the time.

Hot Topic is not punk rock.

A helicopter parent is the kind that "hovers over" their kids. Overprotective. Stop living in the shadow of a helicopter means to break free from parental control.

I think the "living in the shadow of a helicopter" line is about living in military-occupied areas or citizens living under high government scrutiny, literally living under the constant shadows of helicopters.

Funny thing mark said the same exact thing.

When asked what the metaphor means on Tumblr, Mark responded:

"living with fear or oppression. i was driving home from the studio and a helicopter flew overhead, and by chance its shadow crossed right in front of me. i thought of people whose life everyday is spent with these shadows circling."

Instead of "when nobody can hear me down" it is "when nobody can hear me now"

My Interpretation

This song is basically about how our government is running our lives and its going to fail, or it can be about a girl that looks upon a guys past to much hence the line "Lets Light Another Match, Stop Living In The Past" "Stop Living In The Shadow Of My Helicopter".
