Half Moon Lyrics

That morning sky gave me a look
So I left while you were sleeping
that's all it took
and I chalked a line south down the coast
going where my thirst was open
for the things that I don't know
Going where I wasnt paying
for the hurt that I owe
One half moon sleeping by the creeks
and a woman put me under
her barn roof for a week
I knew her voice before she spake
I saw a grave dug by a preacher
just to see what it would make

So hold high how faint your reasons
(or you'll never get on)
Don't you forget you come from nothing
(or you'll never get on)
That wind is calling my name
I won't wait or I'll never get on

It's not hard to live like a ghost
I just haunt all that I've wanted
and leave whatI dont
I dreamt a trail up to the sky
and my brothers built propellers
just to see how far they'd fly

So hold high how faint your reasons
(or you'll never get on)
your flashing sparrows chasing with them
dont you forget you come from nothing
(or you'll never get on)
that wind is calling my name
I won't wait or I'll never get on

That wind is calling my name
and I won't wait or I'll never get on
So hold high how faint your reasons
Hold up high how faint your reason
Hold high how faint your reasons
That wind is calling my name
I won't wait or I'll never get on

Overview:

Someone is debating leaving their current life to go live as a nomad with no responsibilities. Knowing if they choose not to do it now they never will.

Lyrics:

Verse 1: The singer wakes and decides that he wants to leave his current life, before those he knows realize he's gone. He plans to go far enough away that he does not have to deal with the consequences of his actions. He daydreams about living like a nomad, staying in barns, and simply doing things to do them, with no motive.

Chorus: The chorus indicates the two conflicting ideas. "Hold High, Have Faith, Your Reasons" essentially means believe in yourself and this decision, he's telling himself that he has to leave or he never will. The harmony in the background is his fears and doubts telling him that he's not going to leave "Boy, you'll never get on".

Verse 2: He speaks of living like a ghost. He will go from place to place observing but not leaving an imprint. The things he's not interested in he'll simply ignore. Again he speaks of doing things just to do them, and for no other reason.

Chorus: Once again he's telling himself to leave and go but is still struggling with doubts. The final chorus indicates he's overcome his doubt as they are no longer speaking to him. He has decided to commit to leaving, instead the harmony sings with him confirming his choice.

I absolutely adore this song, surely about someone running away from someone or something, most likely someone who just can't settle down and keeps hurting people close to him so he continues to hit the road.

Thanks for providing the lyrics! One suggestion: in the chorus, it should be: "Hold high, how faint your reasons"

Lyric Correction
Cover art for Half Moon lyrics by Blind Pilot

These lyrics are fraught with errors, but I'm sure you did you best with what you heard. I would recommend checking it with what's written in the album booklet and correcting them. They really are a mess.

what are you talking about? the lyrics that happen toward the end of the song are missing, but from what was written there was like one minor error.

oh i get it now. you just wanted to use the new phrase you learned. 'fraught with errors' my ass.

I just read them and listened to it and they seem to be correct

The only error I see is that it's "hold high HOW FAINT your reasons". Straight from the insert.
