Call It in the Air Lyrics
A coin tossed into the air will come down, it will come down somewhere.
Your life is a coin in the air, it will come down somewhere.
Every coin does ring; every coin will fall. Stop your wavering.
Now's the time so call it out. Call it in the air.
You have to choose, and what you stand to lose you've been putting up all of your life.
Call it in my hand. Only one way to see what the outcome will be, call it out before we lose the light.
No more stalling, no delay; you must call it out by light of day.
So heads or tails? There's nothing for it so put an end to your sidestepping.
Is it heads or tails? You can't ignore it; you stand to win or lose everything.

The lyrics in this song are a specific reference to the "coin toss" scene in the movie 'No Country for Old Men'...

Wow undrskn, I would have never guessed. This is a great movie and im sure dustin saw it, liked the idea and ran with it to write this song. It's a good core idea in which you can take it how you want.well done.

I'm glad someone mentioned the "No Country for Old Men" reference! I specifically just made an account to mention it then realized you beat me to it haha, well observed. I wonder if Dustin got it from watching the movie, or reading the book...

The coin toss has been around for generations. No Country For Old Men did not invent the coin toss or change its meaning in any way.

@URalwaysangry, no one is denying that the coin toss existed before No Country For Old Men, but if you've seen the scene from the movie, many of Dustin's phrases are clearly pulled from it, thus we may conclude that is where much of his inspiration emanated.

To me, this song is speaking to people who are riding the fence about their spiritual condition and are called to pick a side before our time on earth is up.
I think this song is a literal as it appears. Dustin is speaking of the indecisiveness we all have. You can't live without ever making a decision. Many times we push and procrastinate, rather than just taking a chance and going with our instincts. You know at some point you must ultimately chose, so waiting does not solve the problem, but instead elongate it.
Also, I am pumped I am the first one here!! Go Thrice you rock!
There isn't much to the lyrics and because of this the meaning seems vague. This whole album lyrically seems more vague than previous releases and Dustin has spoken on this in the vinyl liner notes. This song is about how our lives are filled with choices, both good and bad, and like a coin in the air we must call it out/make a decision. Seems to me that it's about our potential to make good choices in this life.
It's amazing how intentional their musicality is...you get a deep sense of urgency and ominous inevitability when listening to this; as if time's running out. Definitely about certifying your stance on decisions...either hot or cold...the lukewarm will be vomited out.
Very Pascal's Wager.
