Summer's gone and love has withered
I believe in nothing yet nothing is what it seems
All is gone and promises slithered
You have me nothing yet nothing is what it seems
Summer is gone
Your eyes gave away all your lies in the end
The dawning of a seething design
Kept a secret from the light
And felt the weight on my shoulders increase
A bleeding heart led my desperation
Like a bird on a wire
A broken promise of dedication
Never ever again
I believe in nothing yet nothing is what it seems
All is gone and promises slithered
You have me nothing yet nothing is what it seems
The dawning of a seething design
Kept a secret from the light
And felt the weight on my shoulders increase
Like a bird on a wire
A broken promise of dedication
Never ever again

I was just at the Charlotte, NC concert the other night. Mikael introduced this song by talking about Dio's passing and how much that affected him and then his love for the band Rainbow. This song is his tribute to Dio in the style of Rainbow.
With that explanation, it makes a lot more sense to me musically. I can practically hear Dio's voice singing it. And the lyrics are about Mikael looking up to Dio for so long, and then Dio's death leaving him alone and distraught. It was like the end of summer, the breaking of a promise, etc.
The booklet makes it pretty clear anyways: "Slither" recorded as a tribute in the memory of Ronnie James Dio.
the "commercial radio hit" of the album. seriously. this song sucks save for the acoustic outro. also, it seems that desperation led by a bleeding heart is the same as a bird on a wire. i have no clue what that means but mikael seems to. and apparently mikael wants us to know summer is gone.
