Sugar Lyrics

I guess you need a little sugar
Cause you always wander around
How would you like a little fancy
Whenever you feel a little inside out
I heard you need a vacation
Said I bored you right to tears
I heard my love was a season
That you wore for the pretty girls
You said no
That's not the way it goes
You said no
That's not the way it goes
But it is, don't lie
I've seen that curl up around your smile
And it is, don't lie
Who do you think that you're kidding this time

Only I know, I know you get lonely at night
I know, I know you get lonely sometimes
I know, I know you get lonely at night
Nobody knows you like I do

I guess you need a little sugar
Cause you never wait around
I heard you like it to shiver
It's like right up your spine
I saw you walking with him
Down the steps that I walked you in
I got hurried for midnight
With slippers of glass and perfect fits
You said no
That's not the way it goes
You said no
That's not the way it goes
But it is, don't lie
I've seen that curl up around your smile
It is, don't lie
Who do you think that you're kidding this time

Only I know, I know you get lonely at night
I know, I know you get lonely sometimes
I know, I know you get lonely at night
Nobody knows you like I do

Nobody else waits on you
When your hands shake like the breeze
And your mind is a permanent dream
Left your head long before you broke through my door
Baby, baby, but it is, don't lie
I've seen that curl up around your smile
It is, don't lie
Who do you think is gonna be laughing this time
It is, don't lie
I've seen that curl up around your smile
It is, don't lie
Who do you think that you're kidding this time

Long story short, I think this song is basically about a girl who never truly loved the guy. A girl who more or less, was a bit of a tramp, who fooled around with other guys. And then when he confronted her about issues, she tried to play him like the fool, but it was so obvious that he knew the truth of the matter.

"No, that's not the way it goes" "But it is, don't lie. I've seen the curl up around your smile"

Absolutely amazing song. Been streaming this album non-stop. This song in particular.

Man this song is great. Sad that there aren't more comments, I'm hoping that it's because the lyrics are pretty straight forward, and people aren't looking them up. I needed to know what he said about the slippers exactly because I couldn't quite make it out, but knew it was an awesome line.

The reference to Cinderella is pretty amazing if you think of it. People tend to look at that fairy tale and what it means to girls, but I think the fairy tale also teaches boys some pretty crazy stuff about relationships.

I think that you both are correct, and that the song is about him falling for a girl who is a bit of a tramp, but I think that what makes this song unique is the reason for the pain in falling for that girl. He found the girl that the slipper fit on perfectly, his Cinderella, but she didn't want him necessarily. She continued to look for the sugar after her prince charming had come. His love was a season, a temporary deal, to the girl, but to him it was forever. He realizes that her season as a pretty girl will eventually end though, and that no one else will be waiting on her anymore. He's not going to be and that's why he asks "who do you think gonna be laughing this time". It's not going to be her, who smiles when she lies, but him who will refuse to take her back.

Definitely about a girl who isn't sincere about her feelings towards a guy. She's trying to deceive him but he's finally figuring her out.

Also 'sugar' cane be interpreted as love or affection but it can be a reference to coke. So his lover could be a coke addict which would work with the rest of the song:

"How would you like a little fancy, when you feel a little inside out" -about how the drug could make her feel better.

"i heard you like it to shiver It's right up your spine" -Shivering is a symptom of cocaine use/overdose

"Nobody else waits on you When your hands shake like the breeze And your mind is on permanent vacation" -tremors is also a symptom of cocaine overdose. The permanent vacation can be a reference to being high or being in a coma which can result from coke od.

@HunteroftheDusk At first, I thought it was about her stepping out. However, the line:

"When your hands shake like the breeze"

Didn't fit. Everything else in the song can be explained by an unfaithful lover, but that line stuck out. Then it hit me, it was about an unfaithful lover, who was doing drugs. All of a sudden, all the lyrics made sense.

This description captures perfectly how I now view the song. It's also given me insight on some of the references that are clearly drug related, but wasn't sure how exactly. Thank...

I've got a horrible crowes tattoo, this song hits so hard after getting divorced. This album was a breath of fresh air and I honored it on my arm. Best album of 2011

I think the narrator is definitely singing about a woman he sleeps with occasionally. Sounds like she steps out quite a bit and has a bit of a drug problem.

But the more I listen to it, the more the narrator sounds like the deluded one. Sure, she's denying her sleeping around and drug use, but he's the one making excuses for her behavior when the reality is that he's just a lot more serious about her than she is about him. She's not really trying to hide anything with her "oh no, no, nos", just creating the space for him to make it about the other men and drugs when it's actually just that he's kidding himself about their relationship.

Who does she think that she's kidding with her denials this time? Well, not herself, but he sure seems to be willing to delude himself that they have more than they do. But, yeah, sure, buddy, no one knows her like you do. I'm sure if it weren't for the loneliness driving her to other men and coke every night, she'd remember you're deeply in love. Uh-huh. Sure. The narrator is the one kidding himself.

Okay, my theory doesn't complete fit just right, it's not one of Cinderella's glass slippers (pun intended), but here it is: I get the feeling that in this song the guy (Brian Fallon or just a fictional person) starts out thinking that he's the girl's main guy and she's cheating on him with someone else ("I guess you need a little sugar 'cause you always wander around," "Only I know, I know you get lonely") and then he realizes that HE is the other guy ("I saw you walking with him, down the steps that I walked you in. I got hurried by midnight, with slippers of glass and perfect fits") because she's in a hurry to get back home before her husband or boyfriend does so he won't find out about her affair, and to me the chorus is the guy who was the other man in the relationship is telling her not to ask him for any more dates because he knows what's going on.

Great song. I can't see it being about cocaine, as I think fallon is pretty religious I can't see him being with a drug addict. Never thought of that though. I think its him getting the last laugh, which is great. It struck me that maybe she was just with him cuz he's a rock star (my love was a season that you wore..." -- what's your horrible crows tattoo? That's gotta be sick -- I have a GSA one. I used to live in Red Bank and run into Brian on ocassion out and he was like the coolest most down to earth guy in the world. He asked where we lived (gf at the time) and then he's like oh I live on such and such a street. I was like dude you're a rock star my gf is going to be camped out on your lawn. Really cool. Hard to miss him with the tats in public. He was behind me in line at the PJ 20 trailer.

@rbach48 I don't think it's about him doing cocaine, I think it's more about the girl he loves is doing cocaine, and the lying and deceit that goes with it.
