Lights Out, Words Gone

I think this is a song about the singer being dumped because the girl wants to go and explore instead of settling down so he's telling her that when the 'lights' (the excitement of everything she wants to see) are 'out' and 'words' (the words the boys she meet will compliment her) have 'gone' and she's done, he wants to be the one to 'try it on' as in try her on again, asking her to try settling down.

This is him telling her to save her apologies that she tries to make when word gets to her about how heartbroken he is. He blames the thrills of the town that excite her for tearing them apart and calls all the rumours about the city being fun the lies that are burning him.

'Can you feel the leeches bite' is an amazing line. The leeches are the people and he's feeling them 'bite' by the sort of things they are saying, the rumours they are telling him about her and it's painful. 'He's brave and walking sure through all the spots you're working for' This is him saying this boy she's with tonight is perfect for all the things she's trying and wants to be and the boy knows it. He's ticking all the boxes of what this new her wants.

This song is amazing.

Perhaps this song is about a relationship, one that has gone sour. One in which the guy made promises and failed to keep them. I'm sure many of us have said this and that; devoting infinities to our lovers, and then when the time comes to split, we split and forget about all the things we said.

I'm not sure what they mean by the town turning the lies and making them burn? I assume that the love was shared/experienced in a town, and hence the memories associated with the places they would frequent, make it that much more painful to accept that relationship, and the promises as just lies. Because you're in the town, experiencing it constantly, it hurts that much more. (Am I being redundant?)

I'm guessing the guy was the one that ended up breaking his promise? And now some other guy has come to fill that spot, walking sure and confidently through the paths that he feels he created?

Or do they mean that this one confident guy, with all his talk is just messing around(emotionally/physically) with this particular girl that he (the singer) likes, but when he disappears--the phony, this singer will give it a shot with her, and see what he can do?

this is a great song. i think its about someone who might have broken up with someone else and the guy who has liked her even though she was still in a relatonship and wants his chance at her..."when the light is out and the words are gone let me be the one to try them on."

I can relate. Issues with the rumors from surrounding people getting between he and his love interest. And perhaps she's not aware enough to think on her own (Old and wasted words). He runs into her and makes sure he gets the first word, to set things straight.

First verse he says, "Hey. Before you start speaking some bullsh*t, let me tell you what's REALLY going on. I AM hurt over you. That part is true. But everything else people are saying is a lie.

Second verse. Now he's talking to himself.

Guys are hopping [like leeches] on the chance to be with her. This guy that she recently took out: our singer is watching this guy seemingly enter main-girls life without effort. That bastard.

And like other Bombay songs; Our singer resolves to say, "Regardless of what you do, I'll wait for my turn."

Just wondering what Lucy Rose sings just before "let me be the one to try it on" after the verses. It's not in the official lyrics. Any clues? Sounds like "Let me be the one to move on"!

I think he could be referring to a prostitute when he sings about town and all the spots you're working for. Can you feel the leeches bite this could be her punters or could be the gossips. My thinking is he has fallen for a girl and there are rumours/lies she could be a prostitute or maybe has been one and she has said she won't do it any more and he can't trust her words. Whatever the meaning it is a class song and I do not tire of hearing it.
