Pretenders Lyrics

Never have I been so disgusted, never has it all been so clear to me. Ya....

Watch out for pretenders.

No one of any positive reputation will respect what you’ve done.
Judgment will befall your rule, the wrath will break your law.
Harshness will have His place on this. You fake, you were meant to fall down.

Stop (stop), restart (restart). Baah.... Watch out for pretenders.
Obtain perspective, re-evaluate your inception. Endless imitation, obvious plagiarism.

I know how you function (I know how you function):
There will be an end to your profit, your possession.
How did it all become... become published? How can no one see these things?
How can no one see these things? You fake, you were meant to fall.
How can no one see these things? You fake, you were meant to fall down.
How can no.... How can no one.... You fake, you were meant to fall down.

And now the record went gold, but not an ounce of sincerity was achieved.
I know how you function (I know how you function):
There will be an end to your profit, your possession.
How did it all become... become published?
How can no one see... see these things?

Stop, restart. Stop, restart.

To me, this song is about false prophets. There is a significant amount of Biblical prophesy that reinforces these lyrics.

Song: Watch out for pretenders Bible: Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. -Matthew 7:15

Song: Judgment will befall your rule, the wrath will break your law. Harshness will have His place on this. You fake, you were meant to fall down. Bible: Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. -Jeremiah 23:24 Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, declares the Lord. -Jeremiah 23:32 And I will bring upon you (false prophets) everlasting reproach and perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten. - Jeremiah 23:40

Song: Stop (stop), restart (restart). Baah.... Watch out for pretenders. Obtain perspective, re-evaluate your inception. Endless imitation, obvious plagiarism. I know how you function

The lyrics are saying that God is warning you of false prophets. He is warning you before they come so that you will be able to recognize their tricks.

Bible: You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, (referring to God's warnings of false teachers) take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of out Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. -2 Peter 3:17-18 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. -1 John 4:1

Song: How can no one see these things?

Referring to the success of the false prophets in tricking and deceiving people

Bible: And many will follow their sensuality... -2 Peter 2:2

Song: And now the record went gold, but not an ounce of sincerity was achieved.

Talking about how false prophets will attract large followings and gain popularity, but their intentions are in fact, harmful and evil.

Bible: They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. - 2 Peter 2:14 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. -Matthew 24:24

Well, that was my take on this song, incredible lyrics!

I like your take, man! The band's take was literally on the topic of the sea of generic artists/bands that are content to jump onto every trend to make money. "And now the record went gold, but not an ounce of sincerity was achieved." But it's great that you found your own, haha.
