Posters Lyrics

When I was only nine years old
I had a poster
And with that alone I had the education
The motivation
I knew what I wanted to be
Wanted to be
*************
never was the same

Started getting older
I took it on myself
To find out why
Im the way that I am
But I cant find a conclusion
No I think im gettin closer
Yeah I know im gettin closer
My whole wall is filled with posters
My whole life if filled with posters

I used to be outspoken
Doin anything for someones attention
And when that changed I guess you thought
That I was no longer me
Although I finally found me
So take the other bodies
And put them by the tv

You make real friends quickly
You make real friends quickly
But not me

Fucking love this song, all about self awareness and perception versus reality. I'd love to hear Trevor speak on the significance of posters in general, as the word shows up in a couple of his songs.

I'd imagine he'd say posters symbolize your ambitions and your goals.

At nine his (1) poster represented what he wanted. Now, at 22, his life is full of posters--he's living his life, and he's evolved into what he wants to be; they're no longer just goals.

It's a song about finding out who you are as you grow up.

I love the lyrics, but holy mother of god, when the instrumental starts and then the beat kicks in, I'm shattered.

If I ever had to pick a song to define my life and my goals, this would be it. Love it!

This song is about seeing those stupid motivational posters as a young person and thinking they can change you and that they actually work but then as you get older you realize thats not how real life works and even if you try to be the person on the poster, you will never be that person

This song was obviously written as a tribute to the late Hugh Neutron.

R.I.P. Hugh, that damn aggressive pizza.

I think Trevor is writing about growing up and how much a person changes between their teenage years and early 20s. At 9, he had a poster, doesn't matter what kind of poster it was, just that it was an inspiration for him, something that he wanted to emulate or become. As he grows up, he accumulates more posters on his walls, which represents more goals, ambitions, and dreams to drive him. Yet, with all these ambitions and idols that he wishes to emulate, Trevor still felt like he didn't know who he was as a person, and what drove him to be the way he is. When he says "my whole wall is filled with posters, my whole life is filled with posters", I think he's moving forward in his life again to the period when he had become a musician and was starting to play organized shows, and the "posters" he's referring to are all the flyers from his shows and other artists shows that he looks up to. He's basically saying that his interests and desires have become his life.

As for the last part of the song, I think he's talking to a family member or former childhood friend. He was brash in his youth, doing anything to garner attention, but he's grown out of that now, and is much more self reflective. So that person he's talking to wonders what's happened to the Trevor they knew, and he's telling them that he's different now, and that he's finally found himself (aka comfortable with himself, does not need others approval).

[Edit: new info]

This song is about life and getting older (and even love) as is much of his music. Trevor's music is extremely personal to him; he say's it's his way of organizing his thoughts and dealing with his struggles. For me, Youth Lagoon invokes a feeling a nostalgia like no other band I've ever heard. When I first heard their music, I couldn't help but feel like I had heard their music before, maybe as a child or something.
