Even You Brutus? Lyrics
God is good and fate is great,
When it feels so strong it's hard to wait.
You never know how it might unfold,
Hearts to break and bodies to hold.
Time will tell but it never gets old.
Like I told you I'm in for a long long.
Had to have been one of those things
That took place in outer space.
A match made in heaven, not a scratch on her face.
Angels must have smoked some dust,
Singing songs about "In God We Trust".
Some things slide, but this is a must.
Like I told you there's a time for finding out.
Ah people try to tell me what not to do,
"You shouldn't make it with a younger girl", and
Too many chances for the foot to drop,
I tried to tell 'em that I found a pearl, well...
Like I told you be careful what you're asking for.
[Chorus:]
Hey, sister Brutus
Got a mess of a better half, ow
Hey, sister Judas
Even you never had my back.
She was the cutest thing that I ever did see.
A drink in her hand and I don't mean tea.
She was with a dude, but I just didn't care.
I had to find out, these moments are rare.
And Stevie says, "All is fair."
Like I told you there is something for everyone.
Well I guess I never told you some things
That I really, really wanted to say.
Did I do everything I could do,
Or did the mice just need to play?
Like I told you there's more than meets the eye.
[Chorus:]
Hey, sister Brutus
I've got a mess of a better half, ow
Hey, sister Judas
Even you never had my back.
I'm not trying to point fingers at you,
And I'm not trying to lay any blame.
But when it comes to the punishment,
Girl, you know how to bring the pain.
Like I told you I'd do it all again.
[Chorus:]
Hey, sister Brutus
I've got a mess of a better half, ow
Hey, sister Judas
Even you never had my back.
Come on
Hey, sister Brutus
There's a fury to the woman's wrath
Hey, sister Judas
Even you never had my back.
When it feels so strong it's hard to wait.

WOW nobody yet? This is one badass song on a great record...
This song is about betrayal, starting with the title. "Even You Brutus?" were Caesars last words and portray his shock of when he realized that Brutus, one of his best friends, had betrayed him and gone along with the rest of the senate. Anthony relates to this as he feels betrayed because this girl left him when he thought everything was perfect and that the relationship had more to give. Also, the reason for her leaving him was out of his ken as he believed that he treated her and acted correctly. He even relates her betrayal to the most famous of all time, those of Brutus and Judas. In Dante's Inferno, both Brutus and Judas were in the deepest circle of hell because they committed the worst sin of all, betrayal. Judas betrayed God directly while Brutus did it indirectly. It was believed by some that Caesar was fulfilling God's work and Brutus assassinating him was a betrayal of god.
The chorus also seems to have double meanings related to Dante's inferno. Brutus was eaten by Satan feet first, possibly the cause of "Got a mess of a better half", while Judas was eaten head first. Along with being eaten headfirst, Judas' back was skinned relating to "Even you never had my back".
CLEARLY, this song is about his ex-girlfriend Heather Christie. She was 19 when they started dating and 22 when they split "People try to tell me what not to do "You shouldn't make it with a younger girl", Too many chances for the foot to drop, I tried to tell them that I found a pearl." They met, she was dating someone,"She was with a dude, but I just didn't care I had to find out; these moments are rare". He's saying she's a bully "Hey Sister, Brutus"..and he doesn't understand why Judas didn't help him 'play the game'. She may have cheated "did I do everything I could do, or did the mice just need to play?"...Even though all of this happened he doesn't want it to end..."I told you, I'd do it all again"...no regrets!! This song is soo bitchin!!!!
this is, as of this moment, my favorite song on the new album. just perfect.
as for the meaning, I think he's telling a story about falling in love with a younger girl who has a boyfriend, but they eventually have a falling out ("well, i guess i never told you some things that I really, really wanted to say...") and he's telling this story to Brutus and Judas, saying, "you haven't even seen betrayal yet".
Didn't Anthony get charged for being a sex battery?
This song is pretty badass. My favorite from the new album thus far. I love how the singer (whoever Anthony is personifying) is directly challenging two of the biggest villains in history- Brutus and Judas.
Definitely my favorite song on this album. Call me crazy, but I think it's Anthony getting caught making it with a younger girl and he's turned in by either his sister or someone else he trusts pretty well.
Ok, the song's fine, but this is Anthony's weakest album (imo). I don't hate the album, but with some of these lyrics (a drink and I don't mean tea.... come on) and the (incredibly notable) absence of Johnny, no wonder its reviews are so poor. The song's kinda catchy and the album does have some good tracks, Meet Me at the Corner and the stand out track Police Station. The narrator of Dante's Inferno encounters Brutus and Judas, among others, but I suppose that's merely coincidence. As for the meaning, well it's pretty fucking obvious, no need to say anything rly. The first verse is the best and the first line is the best of that, God is good and fate is great. It kinda gets worse from there, oh well.
i would like to think that this song has its shares of good lyrics for example Brendan's Death Song, Did I Let You Know, Happiness Loves Company, Police Station, and Meet Me at the Corner. all these songs in my opinion have great lyrics i love this song especially because he came on with a different approach to a song than before but whatever your opinion is i still think this album has some great lyrics as for the absense of frusciante... hey klinghoffer did a damngood job as a replacement he's no frusciante and he never will be but...

He's thanking god for this life and for fate when it comes to love, he's had many relationships, but he's in it for the long term. He's seen an extremly hot girl across the room, drinking alcohol(not tea),meaning she should be of age,but she's obviously alot younger. She's with another guy, but the feeling he's having is so rare,so he cant help himself and wants to go upto her. His friends warn him,"You shouldn't make it with a younger girl" and Too many chances for the foot to drop....a medical term meaning a longer foot than the other which makes you trip up...(in a relationship) but he doesnt care, cos she's the one. They were both high and on the same wavelength(Had to have been one of those things That took place in outer-space,A match made in heaven) He falls in love with her, yet tells "sister brutus" using the definition on sister being"simular to" Brutus(who we all know) the big slow and stupid part of his mind that got him into this type of relationship... that "I got a mess of a better half and I got a mess of a better hell (a bad, messy relationship but he loves her) Then he tells sister (being simular to) judas (someone thats meant to be a friend but betrays) which is that part of him that usually ruins his own relationships.......that he didnt help him get out of this relationship when he probably should have,or before he fell inlove with her. (didnt have his back this time)And he's obviously arguing this situation to himself all through this track & throughout the relationship. She cheats on him, and he wonders if its his fault,"Well, I guess I never told you some things,That I really, really wanted to say and Did I do everything I could do, or did the mice just need to play?"(or did she just want to have sex with other guys) I'm not trying to point fingers at you Well, I'm not trying to lay any blame But when it comes to the punishment Girl, you know how to bring the pain Like I told you, I'd do it all again Obviously he's hurting really bad and the relationship was a mess, but he loved her and he would do it again. even tho there are plenty of guys that think and feel the same way about having sex with her (There's a jury to the woman's lap)
An epic tail of love and betrayal makes for one bad-ass track!!!!! Gotta love the peppers.
When he says "I tried to tell 'em that I found a pearl, well..." it seems like he is referencing the book The Pearl. It makes sense because afterward he says "Like I told you, be careful what you're asking for" and in the book the guy thought the giant pearl would make him rich, but nobody paid him anything for it. And he ended up becoming a murderer... read the book.
