Ethiopia Lyrics

E I O I E I A
When you give you love away
You get a feeling for

E I O I E I A
Live to love another day
Even when you feel unsure

More and more I wanna raise
Raise my bar
And raise your stakes

E I O I E I A
When I lay there wide awake
For my son I’ll make

Tell my boy
I love him so
Tell him
So he knows
Lost in Ethiopia
We walk out in that road

E I O I E I A
Somethin’ good gonna come your way
Just look out your door

E I O I E I A
Tell 'em what you want to say
No matter what you might incur

E I O I E I A
Steal my heart to give away
Make me want to say

E I O I E I A
You and I are sewn the same
More and more and more
Each day

In the lyric booklet it says "You and I are sewn the same", so you're right.

Also, it's "When I lay there wide awake" and "Something good gonna come your way"

Cool. Thanks for the correction :)

what is the meaning of E I O I E I A ?

I think just a play on the vowels in Ethiopia.

I thought of this song as more as for his son. I think Anthony is telling his son that he loves him and to live in wonders and the line especially, "Something good don't come your way Just look out your door." It is like fatherly advice. I think its very sweet of Anthony to dedicate a song to his son.

"E I O I E I A Somethin’ good gon' come your way Just look out your door"

He's being optimistic and positive.

This is probably my favorite song off the new album. Really catchy and reminiscent of the Californication sound

... and E I O I E A are just randomly picked letters, so that the song could have a better sound... ? The chours sounds brilliant..

This song was inspired by Flea and Klinghoffer's trip to Ethiopia, odd time signatures and mid-tempo funk lay the bed for lyrics of redemption and newfound spirituality.

Yeah, I guess the reference to the Flea's episode in Ethiopia is the fuel to the lyrics show up some aspects of his life with his son and how strong the paternal's love drives his will even when he's not in a good mood. "Tell my boy I love him so Tell him so he knows" and then "Lost in Ethiopia we walk out in that road" even if he is at an unknown hard time and situation he has to face that and move on for something bigger than himself.

Fail. It's "something good gon' come your way".

For me this song is about a desperate father, whose son has become estranged from him and perhaps run away from home, being plunged into a gang culture on the street, as shown by the lyric "When I lie, they're wide awake." Since Ethiopia itself is a very poor, desolate, wartorn country, it is meant to symbolize the empty life the son now faces, and the extreme danger he is in. The reference to the girl in the second verse seems to be a reference to the son's girlfriend, or perhaps simply a female friend whom the father is using as an intermediary to get through to his son. Above all, he wants to explain to his son that he truly loves him, and that he should avoid certain actions and never give up on pursuing his dreams, regardless of how turbulent and difficult his life becomes

My Interpretation

I believe the lyrics are "you and I are so no same," not sewn the same

Lyric Correction

You're wrong. I believe it says "sewn the same" in the liner notes, and it means sewn like when "you reap what you sew" as in sewing (planting) seeds into soil. Therefore, "you and I are sewn the same" means, like, we come from the same background or have come up in similar situations in life.

.. I think it's : "you and I are so no same"
