You Can Leave Your Hat On Lyrics

Baby, take off your coat real slow
Baby, take off your shoes
Here, I'll take your shoes
Baby, take off that vest, uh
Yes, yes, yes
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on

Go on over there, turn on the light
No, all the lights
Come back here, stand on this chair, that's right
Raise your arms up, too, yeah, shake 'em
You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live

Suspicious minds are talking
Tryin' to tear us apart
They say that my love is wrong
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
Come on, baby
Do it, do it
They don't know what love is
I know what love is

Cover art for You Can Leave Your Hat On lyrics by Etta James

Luv Etta and I have always liked this song, but I have NO clue what it is about. I know Etta has a naked person standing on a chair (with lights on) and waving his/her arms in the air. And the hat must mean that s/he won't be spending the night (free to go anytime). There are rumors flying around, but what does this crazy song mean??? It was written at a time when lyrics were much more tame than they are now, so I'm very curious. And what is "they don't know what love is" when she has someone naked and waving on the top of a chair ;) Gotta luv Miss Etta!!!

Gotta give her credit for coming up with such a creative tune. I'm sure each of us can think of someone we'd like to see in just a hat and doing some kind of dance for just us :)
