Endseeker Lyrics
Pry your eyes and behold our captain
(rally round his feet!)
As he controls his captive
(bring him to his knees!)
I said behold our captain
(rally round his feet!)
Calling the bold to stand and
(make the coward bleed!)
Strain your chords
Push this chant through the discord
Lift your gall to an end seeking valor
Bred to abound
Through the years our beating pulses stood contending
The skins they indwell
I said behold the captain
(rally round his feet!)
As he controls his captive
(bring him to his knees!)
Behold our captain
(rally round his feet!)
Calling the bold to stand and
(make the coward bleed!)
"So long all you children!"
(Don't Go! We're almost there!)
"Your road is not yet coming to an end!"
What do my eyes perceive?
So contrary to the promise that secured us
Now you're nowhere to be found
You cant just up and leave
Abandonment is the thumbprint of that cur who just hit the ground
You lead us straight to hell!
THIS IS HELL
THIS IS HELL
MAKE MY GRAVE
OR ANIMATE MY VEINS
MAKE MY GRAVE
OR ANIMATE MY VEINS
"So long you children"
Were the last words that you said
And now my bones just keep bending to reach for an end
You said brace yourself when the air grows thick
And brace yourself when the world constricts
And brace yourself for what will come next
Pry your eyes and behold our captain
(rally round his feet!)
As he controls his captive
(bring him to his knees!)
I said behold our captain

Well, the album is suppose to be framed as a book/story about a woman making her through trials of faith in life, no?
This is actually a perfect introduction song to that, because it seems to be about the original followers of Christ. I honestly thought of when the romans were feeding Christians to lions when he it starts the "you lead us straight to hell" breakdown in the song. The persecution early Christians faced were abhorrent, so it fits the "mark my grave or animate my veins", since MANY, when seeing what they faced, turned away from their faith.
""So long you children" Were the last words that you said And now my bones just keep bending to reach for an end You said brace yourself when the air grows thick And brace yourself when the world constricts And brace yourself for what will come next"
This is relevant to the woman's struggles and trials we hear later on in the album, most likely.

You're 100% correct. Before the album leaked, Micah dropped an interview explaining the meaning of the album.
Where Son of the Morning was a concept album in part, Son of the Morning and The Finisher being the begining and end, Children of Flame is an entire story. Every song has its fit. This picks up at the very moment satan's horns drop to the ground and it was explained beautifully.
The album is from the point of view of two people, a zealous Believer who sees God vanish after the battle and feels abondoned, and his daughter, a non-believer who begins her faith by witnessing the battle. As the battle ends, she starts to see things for how they really are.
Throughout the album, once you really listen to it, you'll see the signs of each persons struggles and triumphs through the album.
Imho this song is coming from the mouth of someone who has been deceived by satan appearing as a false prophet. Satan promised salvation if an action was performed. This person (or these people) did what was asked of them only to be abandoned and led on the path to hell.
CopeFree, ironically I kind of thought the opposite thing: I thought this song is coming from the mouth of a follower of Jesus. When I think of the "So long all you children", and lyrics go onto to say "you can't up and leave", I kind of picture what the disciples must have been thinking when Jesus went up into heaven. They were freaking out because Jesus leaving them on the Earth was the last thing they thought Jesus was going to do. They feeling alone feeling of now what am I suppose to do?

I...
I think this song is about that overwhelming fear that followers of Christ deal with in their walk with God. We and I most definitely feel at times the intimidation that we are all alone in a dark world and the fear of that hard path where Jesus wants to lead us. Because after all, the path Jesus has for people who follow him is one that requires that they carry their crosses. A path that leads to not literal hell I think, but a life that can be very challenging.
So in the song, I think the narrator knows these harsh consequences and outcomes that await for him since he is following Jesus. That is why in my opinion without a doubt the coolest lines of the song, narrator shouts "MAKE MY GRAVE OR ANIMATE MY VEINS" in realization that unless Jesus fills this person with the Holy spirit, the person walking the challenging path is screwed-- as it would be pointless to get through this life by himself.
Awesome song though! I heard it live at one of their recent concerts, but I couldn't understand the lyrics at all so I thought the song was okay nothing special. But now that I understand the lyrics, I am absolutely blown away! Oh, Sleeper continues to grow leaps and bounds with their lyrics, writing style, and musicianship. I find it really cool that they build on themes from their other albums such as "When I am God" with the theme of relying on the 'Captain' being Jesus and then spiritual war theme from "the Son of the Morning" album. I am so stoked for this upcoming album, it is going to be amazing! I also can't wait to see them again in concert and sing this anthem with authority.
After re-listening a few (hundred) times I think I have to agree with you coldturkey, although I do think my initial thoughts could make for a good song

The believer is seeing God rip off satans horns and hes saying finally satan is going to die everyone see how glorious our God is, but then God and satan dissapear right after God rips off satans horns, and in the second verse hes saying,
"What do my eyes perceive? So contrary to the promise that secured us Now you're nowhere to be found You cant just up and leave Abandonment is the thumbprint of that cur who just hit the ground"
And seeing how God abandoned him, he gives up all hope and curses God because he thinks God led him to hell and doesnt care
"You lead us straight to hell!"
And then the believer basically says the world God left him in is hell and he might as well go there unless God comes back and brings him new life,
And he remembers Gods last words "So long all you children" But he also remembers God telling him to:
"brace yourself when the air grows thick And brace yourself when the world constricts And brace yourself for what will come next"
Oh, Sleeper's last album was about a physical war between God and Satan. In the last song on that album, "The Finisher," God cuts off Satan's horns and kills him. This album begins directly afterwards.
The first few lines describe the last moments of the fight, with lines like "Behold our Captain, as he controls his captive," showing that God is winning. After he kills Satan however, things take a turn.
The line "So long all you children, The road is not yet coming to an end" is God telling the followers that have fought for him that their victory is not going to be what they expected, and then he vanishes. The remaining lines of the song are the followers of God expressing their disbelief, and accusing God of abandoning them after all they've given.
