here's my take on the lyrics:

the narrator knows that he shouldn't be with this person, but there's something that keeps him around (whether the other person is stringing him along on purpose or what, who knows). he's also not quite sure what happened between them and maybe that's the reason he can't let go. he needs closure and wants answers.

I love this song. It's meaning is similar to 'into deep' by genesis. He's at odds with where the relationship with someone who isn't into it like he is.

The true image of the song is really defined best by the video. The older fisherman and the younger. It's portraying him (the older fisherman) searching for the youth and beauty in life when he was young, before life started dragging him down, his ball and chain. "I can't keep hanging on" speaking about the beauty in life that he was searching for so hopelessly (wildly casting the pole, even getting out into the water, a panicked look on his face.) He was searching so hard for hope and beauty in life that he killed himself. Not purposefully but fatefully. "I can't keep hanging on to you and me" he couldn't continue hanging on to life with out beauty and hope.

That's just my opinion! Hope you like it.
