Into the Wilderness Lyrics

The Alaskan tundra and the wild bears
I am returning to that nightmare

Life and death are given a different meaning
in grizzly kingdom above the treeline where the permafrost’s growing deeper
I could never climb those mountains, I could never be
sleeping safely under the same stars as timothy
Into the wilderness away from the loneliness

You walked with the foxes dancing ’round your feet they followed you to the last sleep
You walked with the foxes dancing ’round your feet they followed you into your dreams
and they followed you… Into the wilderness away from the lonelyness

The animal with the strongest paw
mixed friends with prey - it’s nature’s law
I could never climb those mountains, I could never be
sleeping safely under the same stars as timothy
Into the wilderness away from the loneliness

Pretty sure this song describes a fascination Timothy Treadwell, the subject of the documentary "Grizzly Man". Treadwell lived among wild grizzly bears in Alaska before being killed by one in 2003. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Treadwell

Most of the references to Alaska, grizzlies and to the name Timothy are pretty self- explanatory. The lyrics about playing with foxes also match up with footage from Grizzly Man. "Into the wilderness, away form the loneliness" parallels the portrayal of Treadwell as an outcast, living among bears because he preferred the wilderness to the life he had left behind.

Song Meaning

Oh wow. I'm so glad someone with some insight commented on this song because I've been wondering and I would have NEVER known this!!!!! Amazing. I just love this song. The lyrics were so mysterious to me. They're almost more mysterious now that I have clear cut imagery and this tragedy of this guy being killed by the bears she's singing about ... eerie. Thank you, er, dickslap.

@dickslap this must indeed be the background for this song. i was quite stunned to stumble upon this relation
