Yellow Belly Lyrics

You were built for blessing but you only make them bleed, but you don’t care, you don’t care.
And bruises are but shadows of the blackness that you breathe but you don’t care, you don’t care.
The light that's left inside their eyes is darkened day by day but you don’t care, you don’t care.
The presence pulls the color from the world til all is grey
but you don’t care, you don’t, you don’t, you don’t.
You're less than half a man, yellow belly and crimson hands
You will one day reap your reckoning, maybe then you’ll understand.
Your hands are made to comfort but they only conjure fear
But you don’t care, you don’t care.
She’s in the closet praying Lord please get me out of here
you don’t care, you don’t you don’t you don’t.

You're less than half a man, yellow belly and crimson hands
You will one day reap your reckoning, maybe then you’ll understand.
What mercy have they known, from you, from you.
To ask that I be shown, to you , to you. X2

it's actually what mercy have they known, from you, from you.

you are less than half a man, yellow belly and crimson hands.

also i remember about a month ago reading or seeing something saying how dustin stated there was a song that had to do something with domestic abuse or something along those lines. i'm pretty sure thats what this song is about.

feel free to debate me but from the corrected lyrics and having listened to the 70 plus times i'm gonna say yeah.

I believe you are absolutely correct. I think this lyric basically removes any doubt: "She's in the closet praying lord please get me outa here but you don't care, you don't, you don't, you don't, you don't"

I dont think 'you' is god due to the mention or the lord in the previous line, therefore it would be the father. At least thats what I think.

theres the link i was talking about. dustin says there is a song dealing with "bad or abusive fathers" that's definitely the song.

Pretty good lyrics so far. I think most is correct. Some things are off although I have no idea what they should be instead. But I think that "you warned our reap your reckonings" should instead be "you'll one day reap your reckonings"

I think the line in the chorus is " You will one day reap your reckonings, maybe then you'll understand"

I agree with the abusive father interpretation. It could also be about any authority figure that is responsible for caring for others such as priests, teachers, police, etc.

Instead of "But they only cause you fear..." I think it might actually be "but they only CONJURE fear..." No biggie, just what I hear and makes perfect sense with the rest of the lyrics.

@gik: in my opinion the phrase 'yellow belly' is used as a synonym for 'coward'

I agree with those on here that have said the lyrics are probably about domestic violence. I mean, the first line says "You were built for blessing but you only make them bleed." Man was made, according to the Bible, to be a blessing to both God and others. It talks about bruising, bleeding, taking joy out of life. I love that having children was such a perspective-shifting experience for Dustin. Since then we have seen songs like Daedalus, the Whaler, As the Crow Flies, and now this. He really conveys his passion for this subject in this song and always manages to show how much he loves his children. It is inspiring. I hope that someday when I have children I can let them know in meaningful ways that they are wirth more than life to me.

Abuse to be sure but specifically I think he's talking about the sexual abuse cases perpetrated by the catholic priests that was predominantly reported in the 90's and early 2000's.

My lyrics, which to me make more sense than what's posted:

Verse 1 You were built for blessing, But you only make them bleed, You don’t care, you don’t care And bruises are but shadows Of the blackness that you breed, But you don’t care, you don’t care The light that's left inside their eyes is darkened day by day But you don’t care, you don’t care The presence pulls the color From the world til all is grey But you don’t care, you don’t, you don’t, you don’t.

CHORUS You're less than half a man Yellow belly and crimson hands You’re the ones that reap your reckoning, Maybe then you’ll understand

Verse 2 Hands are made to comfort But they only cause you fear But you don’t care, you don’t care, She’s in the closet, praying “Lord, Please get me out of here” You don’t care, you don’t you don’t you don’t

Chorus

OUTRO What mercy have they known, From you, from you. To ask that I be shown, To you , to you.

Great corrections in the comment section! Such fantastic lyrics, wouldn't expect any less from the great Kensrue.

Though I do agree its One day reap your reckoning. and Conjure not cause you, but thats just what I hear

Definitely agree with this. At first was hearing "Cause your fear" but that didn't entirely make sense, but a definite "r" sound in that. Conjure makes much more sense, thanks.
