Bright Lights Lyrics

Wake up in New York City
Lying on the floor
Just outside of Marcy's - West 54 “wow”
You gonna know my name by the end of the night “well”
You gonna know my name by the end of the night “well”
Bright lights, big city going to my head
Bright lights, big city going to my head
Bright lights, big city going to my head
I don’t care no, no
You don’t care
Start up with the bottle
End it up with the bottle
Taking shots, waiting for tomorrow
Trying to fill up, was hollow
You gonna know my name
You gonna know my name
Bright lights, big city going to my head
Bright lights, big city going to my head
Bright lights, big city going to my head
I don’t care no, no
Cause you don’t care
Get lost in this city trying to find myself
I woke up with different versions
Came down somebody else
I know it ain´t right
But its song in my head
Wow I’m surprised
I’m still alive I should breathe in
Bright lights, big city going to my head
Bright lights, big city going to my head
Bright lights, big city going to my head
I don’t care no, no
You don’t care
You gonna know my name
You gonna know my name
You gonna know my name
You gonna know my name by the end of the night, well…

Can't believe nobody has commented on this song! Saw him live at Wakarusa I had never heard of him before then, but man did he put on a show. He played this song and I was blown away!

I’ve thought a lot about these lyrics. For me, it has an ominous feeling to it, and for some reason it reminds me of the movie “Taxi Driver.”

It starts out with “Woke up in NYC lying in the floor.” Okay, he was drunk.

“Outside of Marcey’s West 54.” I’m not sure what Marcey’s is; is it a nightclub? I googled it and nothing came up. Is it a woman’s apartment? If so, why was he outside it?

Now comes an important part of the song. I say this because it or some variation of it is repeated seven more times. “You’re gonna know my name at the end of the night.” Again, it has an ominous ring to it, almost like a threat. What is he going to do?

Now comes the chorus: “bright lights big city going to my head.” He’s confused and in pain, probably because of the bright lights, which I assume bother him because he has a hangover… or is he having a breakdown?

“Start off with the bottle, end it up with the bottle.” Okay, he’s drinking a lot, trying to drown out his pain.

“Taking shots, waiting in tomorrow.” I find the phrase “taking shots” to have a double meaning. Sure, he’s taking shots of liquor, but could he be taking shots with a gun, too? This ties in with the repeated “You’re gonna know my name…”

“Trying to fill up what’s hollow.” Another reminder that he’s in emotional pain.

“You gonna know my name…” I said this before. It’s a threat.

Can't wait to see this guy live. I was at the Experience Music Project in Seattle this weekend--standing in the Sky Church right outside of the Hendrix exhibit--and saw the film recording of his performance of Bright Lights from Clapton's Crossroads guitar festival from 2010. Mind = Blown.
