This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

This guy is clearly just going through the motions in almost alternate lines. Its a vicious circle, Bitter, Self-sympathetic, Putting on a front and then quickly descending back to Bitter and Self Sympathetic.
I think its a classically well-written song, not trying to be anything. Beautifully simplistic and honest in terms of emotion. An expressive and perfect capture of anyone and everyone's variety of feelings in that situation, stage by stage.
This is an example of why you should have a weekly (or at least monthly) article written and published. This is what others who love music and the written word are missing for whatever reason (or excuse) you make. And don't say it's because you don't enjoy writing about music. I ain't buyin'
