So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody (I used to know)
(Somebody) now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody (I used to know)
(Somebody) now you're just somebody that I used to know
I used to know, that I used to know, I used to know somebody
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end

I thought this song was really great because it tapped into a situation many are in but there's no real anthem to it (there is now). The lyrics out of the course are a basic break-up, one like any other. It didn't work for whatever reason but the main thing is that they said they would still be friends. The chorus is about one party realizing that when they said they would still be friends it wasn't true, it was all lip service, and that really hurts! Breaking up with someone you really care about and tried really hard to be with is hard enough, most people don't want to get rid of that relationship completely, especially if they didn't make the call to end the relationship, it's so hard to cut such a huge part of your life out like that. A lot of people want to act mature and take it slowly, take steps down out of respect for eachother. When someone agrees to that and flee's it's one of the most rejecting feelings one can experience! It feels like they didn't care about you at all! Like it says, it's low, it's not the end of the world, but it's a hard pill to swallow.
This song is truly an anthem for getting over someone who you loved then decided to cut you out without a second thought, because that happens to so many of us.
"act mature and take it slowly, take steps down out of respect for each other."<br /> <br /> That's not acting mature. Acting mature is being done with a relationship when it's over. Clinging to someone, taking "steps down" is not respectful, it's selfish, obsessive and, in some cases, borderline abusive. It's trying to keep a dead relationship alive, and it's emotional torment for both parties.<br /> <br /> And I think that's the most important part of this song. He's whining and complaining about it, acting like an obsessive child. She's saying, "Look, fella, this is how it is. Move on!"
Actually what the op says is right,if some1 you love or went through alot with just walks out on you severing all ties in an instance it is devesating as it puts a massive question mark on everything they ever felt towards you. It can be like a death of a loved 1,it's a fast closure you did'nt see coming and you can't get answers. I see your point too but trust me if you ever experience this you will understand what the male is singing about and understand his perspective.
... sounds like someone's trying to justify some bad decisions...
