Coppertank Island Lyrics
Ladies and gentlemen, we are in a little bit of a predicament
He said, "take your time," but didn't back his words
Heroes and holy ghosts, which one of you steps on the others' toes?
And then risks his neck like it's a moving target?
You?
And was that just you being stubborn?
Can't you say pretty please?
Wasn't it an eggshell carpet
That brought you to your knees?
If the right built the anchor
And the wrong have set sail
I'm a whale, I'm a, well, I'm a whale
Busy bees and worrywarts, we are not in the business of fireworks
Or turning heads that whistle in the dark
Sitting ducks and guinea pigs are the first to catch word
Of straws in the wind don't stop them
Remember this, it's just two cents
Two cents never made you rich
And was that just you being stubborn?
Can't you say pretty please?
Wasn't it an eggshell carpet
That brought you to your knees?
If the right built the anchor
And the wrong have set sail
I'm a whale, I'm a, well, I'm a whale
You?
I've shown my white feathers
And was that just you being stubborn?
Can't you say pretty please?
Wasn't it an eggshell carpet
That brought you to your knees?
And I'm a whale, I'm a, well, I'm a whale
If the right built the anchor
And the wrong have set sail
I'm a whale, I'm a, well, I'm a whale
He said, "take your time," but didn't back his words
Heroes and holy ghosts, which one of you steps on the others' toes?
And then risks his neck like it's a moving target?
Can't you say pretty please?
Wasn't it an eggshell carpet
That brought you to your knees?
And the wrong have set sail
I'm a whale, I'm a, well, I'm a whale
Or turning heads that whistle in the dark
Sitting ducks and guinea pigs are the first to catch word

Remember this, it's just two cents
Two cents never made you rich
Can't you say pretty please?

I just really love the riff. Very pirate-y. This song's really, really fun to listen to.
On a more serious note, I'm wondering if this song's about the hypocrisy in the so-called right-wing american patriotism.
Being loud about "supporting our troops" but then being more concerned about your appearances than actually, you know, supporting the troops, is the impression I'm getting.
If the right built the anchor And the wrong have set sail I'm a whale, I'm a well, I'm a whale
from this i get that one side 'the right' makes a decision or a choice which would be the 'anchor' while the 'wrong' go the opposite way or 'set sail' meanwhile the speaker is the 'whale', looking on and watching this all take place, like a whale could see an anchor underwater as well as the boat setting sail, still attached to the anchor.
Assuming the anchor and boat are attached to one another (presumably by rope) what does that make the rope? The 'middle ground'? the situation?
I'm pretty sure the line is "I'm a whale, I'm a whale, I'm a whale." That fits the whole nautical theme to the song, don't ya think?

I think this song is about war, where soldiers are sent off to battle, and don't challenge their leader's orders. They can't, it's their duty. They may be "wrong" in their actions, but the "right" are not willing to fight and defend themselves. The right know what the pain of losing their children is (eggshell carpet), but they won't fight to not see it, and fighting would bring that pain to someone else. The right are also holding back their loved ones in this analogy.
Heroes and spiritual saviors, which one steps on each other's toes and risks their life? Heroes risks life and steps on morals by killing, while the saviors risk their life often through lose of the physical battle.
As far as which war, the line "He said, "take your time," but didn't back his words," probably tells you.
I love the line "Remember this, it's just two cents: Two cents never made you rich"
As for the whale, well, it could be Jonah judging the two sides.
