I think it's about not really knowing how you feel about someone or not knowing how they feel about you but being willing to give it a chance anyway and seeing what happens.
I think this song is quite simply about a boy and a girl knowing each other from childhood and fighting all the time. They probably found eachother really annoying and in the lighter sense, 'hated each other'. But as they grow up they start having these moments and now the boy (Ed) is confused, does he love the girl he hated all his life? He has these new sensations, feelings and responds to her touch or if she looks a him. It's a very sweet song all in all about the changes that come in our lives with growing up and Ed's beautifully put it through the eyes of a newcomer in the young adult world (as I presume)
