Understanding What We've Grown To Be

Great song, more of the same great We Came As Romans, I'm glad they haven't changed their sound like a lot of bands seem to when they come out with a new album.

I think this song is one of the most amazing and moving songs I've ever heard. It's absolutely gorgeous. Here's what I think it means:

I think it's about someone who's had a rough time in life and finally comes to an understanding.

"All the lights, Were too bright to see the spark That I've been missing for too long. Something I've been missing for too long." These lines show that all along they've been missing the real meaning in all of their pain, the understanding of that what they're going through will help make them a better person in the long run and it will change their life for the better when they finally get out of that position in their life.

"My empty cup, Could never fill another. I have spilled all I've had, To make things better. But the love of all others, Has made me new." They're exhausted from constantly trying to repair them self and they can't protect/help the ones they love anymore. They've wasted all their energy trying to make things better, but because of the love of the people around them, it's helped them and make them a new/better person.

"We've all been broken So let us make each other new. So let us make each other new." We're all broken and torn, so let's repair each other and help each other move on and get better.

All this time they've felt dead inside and they've tried to convince their self that they feel alive, there's nothing wrong, and they may even put on a front for people pretending they're okay, but really it only kills them even more inside. Hence the line, "I've died inside every time I tried to lie to myself about feeling alive, alive".

"All these distractions, Kept me from seeing what I needed all along, An understanding." All the problems in their life and their pain have been distracting them from making an understanding. What they truly needed more than anything was an understanding, and understanding that their pain will change them for the better in the end, it will help them become and sincere and better person. They have these people that love them and as long as they have them, they can get through this part of their life and move on.

"I am speechless tonight As I stare into the sky. I feel endless compassion, forgiveness, and love, I feel everyone who is looking up sharing this, I feel unexplainably alive." They finally feel alive because they know everything will turn out okay if they keep holding on because they feel the love from everyone and it's helped them and it motivates them to keep living. The moment they reached an understanding they felt the most alive they've ever felt in a long time.

"I need to understand what we've grown to be." They need to understand that they haven't grown to be a bad person, they've grown to be a person who understands pain and sorrow in life and they can get stronger from that and help other people. They will be a better person from their bad life experiences.

"Tonight, when I look into the sky I know this is why I am alive. Tonight, when I look into the sky I know this is why I am alive. So sing with me if you feel this feeling. So sing with me if you feel this feeling. I'm alive." When they look into the sky, they understand why they are still alive, even after all of their pain and suffering. They understand that these awful things will make them better. It makes them feel alive.
