When I saw Lights live she explained the story behind this song. She said that someone she'd been dating someone and they broke up. She was very angry and upset so she wrote a song to express that anger. She had it all written and was going to let the world hear it but then she realised that it was wrong to do so. It would be better to write a positive song rather than a negative song. So instead she wrote a different song, this one.
That's all she said, so I've interpreted this song based off of that story. There are plenty of interpretations, but here's mine:
Basically, I think that this song is set after the break up. She's saying that even though he hurt her, he's still the only one in the dark she can see. Because they had a good time together and she does miss him, even though the relationship ended badly. At the time he was always there for her and she'll never forget that.
Most would say that this song is about someone special in her life, and, yes that is true. However, more specifically, I would say it's about her relationship with her Father (God, Yahweh, her papa).

When I first heard this song, I cried.
As she said in the original video, this is a positive song. I find it a song which gives me hope and inspires me. I truly hope it inspires you as well.
