Black Betty & The Moon Lyrics

My love, my love, you're the sting of the scorpion
Consider, now, the angels, a little lower than you
And they twist and they turn, and they hold their breath 'til it's blue
And they can't turn away like I can, when you're lookin' like you do

Looky Black Betty, what they're tying to you
You did the very thing, baby, that I asked you not to do
And now you got yourself caught in the silk spiderweb
I hope the money fills the holes, can see the roof is caving in

My heart, my heart, you're the moon and her shining light
Darkness and void of form, like you were keeping me alive
And I've been dreaming of poisonings from the venom of my enemies
Clever as the viper, dear, but gentle as a stampede of stones

Looky Black Betty, what they're tying to you
You did the very thing, baby, that I asked you not to do
Now you got yourself caught in the silk spiderweb
I hope the money fills the holes, can see the roof is caving in

And they want you to doubt every trust that you've known
And they wanna find the holes in the armor exposed
And they come on whispering,
If you just do this for me...
And turn and show their teeth just before they're sinking in
And better than described and deeper the decent
I never thought we'd have to learn to doubt our friends
And better than described, so much deeper the decent
I never thought we'd have to learn to doubt our friends

Looky Black Betty, what they're tying to you
You did the very thing, baby, that I asked you not to do
Now you got yourself caught in the silk spiderweb
I hope the money fills the holes, can see the roof is caving in

Looky Black Betty, what they're tying to you
You did the very thing, baby, that I asked you not to do
Now you got yourself caught in the silk spiderweb
I hope the money fills the holes in the place I used to stand

Yeah, my apologies - I tried to edit this and include the full lyrics when the album was out, but it looks as though it didn't work. Here's for anyone who needs them:

@xheartbreakerx Love when the furious transition hits from the more resigned tone. He knew what would happen to someone new in his world, he warned her against the rapacious busybodies waiting in the shadows, but she didn’t get it immediately, didn’t see the trap, fell into it, and the trust in their relationship was shattered for good. Sucks. Horrible for all involved. But it recognizes that sometimes there’s no recovery and redemption able to be offered— sometimes your heart just can’t stand certain hurts, certain betrayals. He knew he wouldn’t be able to, tried to tell her, but she wasn’t...

I'm not really sure exactly what this song is about but the way I've interpreted it, it's about betrayal, the bits about doubting friends and "Black Betty" doing the "very thing" that he asked her not to do etc... I kind of interpretted the "silk spiderweb" as a more eloquent way of saying "web of lies". I don't know I'm just bullshitting, but yeah it's such a good song. I wish I could personally ask Brian to explain every song he's written to me.

I'm pretty sure it's "I hope the money fills the holes, 'cause, see, the roof is caving in", but it's the only real mistake I noticed.

Anyway, I think you're on the right track, l0vecats. It seems to be talking about a girl who has done quite a bit of lying to get her way and essentially find happiness in having her boyfriends buy her things. Thing is, she eventually loses track of everything she's wrapped up it and gets found out.

Both comments are fairly well on track. It's about friends selling their friends out for their own benefit.

Not all the lyrics by the way. There are other parts of the song that explain this a little better as well.

Amazing album.
