No God (White) Lyrics
No god could teach me what my father did
No promise of heaven kept me warm when my mother tucked me in
No hope for salvation kept me from sin,
Just a small intuition not to do what all the bad ones did
And what comes next is a mystery to me
I guess I'll have to wait and see
'Cause everything I ever knew could just fall apart
I only know what I've been told
And I was told what others know
And others know what they were told
And they were told what others know
And I'll wait to tell what's wrong or right
And no fear of dying keeps me alive
And all we know is what we're told
And we were told what others know
And all they know is what they're told
And they were told what others know
And I'll wait to tell what's wrong or right
And no fear of dying keeps me alive
No promise of heaven kept me warm when my mother tucked me in
No hope for salvation kept me from sin,
Just a small intuition not to do what all the bad ones did
And what comes next is a mystery to me
I guess I'll have to wait and see
'Cause everything I ever knew could just fall apart
And I was told what others know
And others know what they were told
And they were told what others know
And no fear of dying keeps me alive
And we were told what others know
And all they know is what they're told
And they were told what others know
And no fear of dying keeps me alive

I think the song's about how religion promises love, comfort and all these answers to questions about death and what happens next and the like, but that in the end we don't actually need religion in the first place to feel those things, if that makes sense. In the song, the person is completely happy with not having the answers other than what he's being told, and that he never needed a higher power or faith in order to feel things such as love and warmth from his parents, or rules to tell him what he should and shouldn't do because he already knows that by himself.
So yeah, it's about how people often hold religion as the only way to live in this world, when everything it promises can be gained just fine without it. And the song is pretty kick-ass.
Very, very interesting! i really can see this that way, but i have a strong gut feeling when i first heard this song. The title makes it seem like a song easily belonging on Black. but the inherit goodness of the song and the person in it puts up a very important wall - White is not religion, it is not a strong spiritual influence. Its a human creation and as black as life can be, life can be white as well. With an inherit moral compass and a love for family and friends you can lead a loving life...

Humans CAN be bastards. But they can also be amazing creatures. The strong parental connection makes me compare it to Son and Father, two tracks from Act three. That feeling of bieng tucked in is especially strong for me.

to me this song is saying that all this faith we have in something we are still uncertain of, should also be had in each other more often, I think.
