My girlfriend just broke up with me so (in the moment) I can relate to this song. My interpretation is that you are not the center of the universe, and you can't control everyone's actions. Whoever you are in contact, try to appreciate them. Don't just do things for them that are artificial; express your love for them with feeling. Through the chorus, I think Ben is suggesting that mistakes should always be reconsidered or forgiven. I wish I could told my ex-girlfriend "don't give up on me now", but sometimes people just don't listen. Great song. As always Ben Harper is the shit!
