Woke Up Older Lyrics
You've got lunch with your sister tomorrow
So we can't be up late
You don't mind if I sleep in
But then I've gotta pack my things
So I stacked a Bukowski novel on a Blacklisted LP
And this time what it looked like was just what it proved to be
You said you needed a stiff drink to take your mind off things
Hey Jess, I woke up older
Carrying two years in the bags under my eyes
Hey Jess, I watched you wake up and get dressed
You left the room receded like my hairline
I've been avoiding Rittenhouse like the plague
Because I just can't handle seeing you today
You made this house into a home
Now, I'm a stranger on my street
And as I turned to leave
I caught myself in the mirror to see I aged a year this week
I left a note up on your bed that said
Hey, thanks again for everything you did
Hey Jess, I woke up older
Carrying two years in the bags under my eyes
Hey Jess, I watched you wake up and get dressed
You left the room receded like my hairline
When John introduced Woke Up New in St. Augustine
I knew I wasn't alone
When I woke up here without you
There was nothing to do but pack up and go home
Hey Jess, I woke up older
Carrying two years in the bags under my eyes
Hey Jess, I woke up older
Carrying two years in the bags under my eyes
Hey Jess, I watched you wake up and get dressed
You left the room receded like my hairline
So we can't be up late
You don't mind if I sleep in
But then I've gotta pack my things
So I stacked a Bukowski novel on a Blacklisted LP
And this time what it looked like was just what it proved to be
You said you needed a stiff drink to take your mind off things
Carrying two years in the bags under my eyes
Hey Jess, I watched you wake up and get dressed
You left the room receded like my hairline

You made this house into a home

Just when you think The Wonder Years couldnt get any better, they make a Mountain Goats reference. Amazing.
Firstly, I think the line "So I stacked a Bukowski novel on a Blacklisted LP and this time what it looked like was just what it proved to be" is an obvious reference to the line "I stacked ‘Lonelier than God’ next to ‘You Get So Alone Sometimes.’ I know how this must look from the outside" from "Everything I Own Fits In This Backpack"
Secondly, "I left a note up on your bed that said 'Hey, thanks again for everything you did'" seems to be a reference to the song "Hey Thanks," so I'd guess that the song is about the same person.
Also, when he sings "When John introduced Woke Up New in St. Augustine I knew I wasn't alone" he's talking about the song by The Mountain Goats. (The lyrics are here: http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858607873/) The story John introduces the song with can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOuP__Iap9E (In fact I think that might be the exact performance that Soupy's talking about, it's from a show at Harvest of Hope in St. Augustine, FL on March 13, 2010.)
great post matthew. I signed up, literally to say that.
whilst I'm here I thought I'd add that although I didn't like this song much the first few times I heard it, it's now one of my favourites on Suburbia.
As we learn in hey thanks, he wrote it about a girl he lived with for two years and her name was jessica, so there, that's the jess part solved.
I think this song is about how the narrator broke up with 'Jess'. Hey Thanks is him saying thank you to her and this song is the story of how they broke up.
