Filth and Squalor Lyrics
Somewhere there's a choice being made
For the mass by the will of a broken few
Guided by the hand of the guilty
Praised as the cure for a curse
Really this is all catastrophic
And we're tethered to the hull of a sinking ship
Scratching for a breath at the surface
Praying for the ropes to slip
I always knew that the damned would inherit the earth
As soon as they learned to speak, we would be suffering
Sucking on the scraps of a wicked well
We were bound by need, to vicious villainy
Tear it down start again
Erasing every trace so stale scars can mend
Then we will sing,
The way things used to be
The way things used to be
The way things used to be
The way things used to be
I always knew that the damned would inherit the earth
As soon as they learned to speak, we would be suffering
Sucking on the scraps of a wicked well
We were bound by need, to vicious villainy
Tear it down start again
I always knew that the damned would inherit the earth
As soon as they learned to speak, we would be suffering
Choking on the scraps of a wicked well
We were bound by need, to vicious villainy
I always knew that the damned would inherit the earth
As soon as they learned to speak, we would be suffering
Sucking on the scraps of a wicked well
And we were bound by need, to vicious villainy
Tear it down start again
For the mass by the will of a broken few
Guided by the hand of the guilty
Praised as the cure for a curse
And we're tethered to the hull of a sinking ship
Scratching for a breath at the surface
Praying for the ropes to slip
As soon as they learned to speak, we would be suffering
Sucking on the scraps of a wicked well
We were bound by need, to vicious villainy
Erasing every trace so stale scars can mend

I think this song is expressing the belief that the world is ruled by the corrupted who do more bad than good for society. And that the mass (the rest of the world) are blinded to this and see these rulers as saviors. The only way to end this problem is for society to be destroyed and rebuilt, "tear it down, start again"
The lyrics are actually 'And we're tethered to the hull of a sinking ship'
Somewhere there’s a choice being made, for the mass by the will of a broken few. Guided by the hand of the guilty. Praised as a cure for a curse. When really this is all catastrophic, and we’re tethered to the hull of a sinking ship, scratching for a breath at the surface, praying for the ropes to slip. / I always knew that the damned would inherit the earth. As soon as they learned to speak we would be suffering. Sucking on the scraps of the wicked wealth, we were bound by need to vicious villainy. / Tear it down, start again, erasing every trace so stale scars can mend. Then we will sing,”The way things used to be”. / I always knew that the damned would inherit the earth. As soon as they learned to breed we would be suf fering. Choking on the scr aps of the wic ked wealth. We we’re bound by need to vicious villa iny.
I think some of these lyrics are wrong.
"tethered to the hull of a sinking ship" "choking on the scraps of a wicked wealth" also it's missing a point where it says "as soon as they learned to breed, we would be suffering"
I think this song is about the lines between poverty and wealth. It takes place in a dystopian society where the rich rule completely and poverty is at the extreme.
Basically the whole thing's about how the rich are making all the decisions, and the poor have no say in it. All in the government is corrupt and their so-called "help" is hurting all the poor people.
"As soon as... we would be suffering" As soon as the rich children learned to talk, they would already be making the poverty-stricken suffer. As soon as a child is born into poverty, they're already doomed in this world.
"Choking/sucking on the scraps of a wicked wealth." They only get the cores of the wealthy's apples, if you know what I mean.
I kind of assumed that the poor started a revolt of sorts and that when it says "tear it down, start again" that they were throwing away rough drafts of the plans, then they would start again, with bigger and better plans.
I was actually disappointed with most of the album; probably because I heard this song first, and the rest of the album couldn't compete with it. Easily the best song on the album, and one of my new TDH favorites.
The meanings pretty straightforward though. We're being oppressed.
@Carcigenicate Actually, I take that back. After a couple more listens through, I can't say that there are any tracks that I don't like. I highly recommend this album.
