Monday Morning Lyrics
She may be young but she only likes old things
And modern music it ain’t to her tastes
She loves the natural light
Captured in black and white
She sees mirages of mountain ranges
Within the blink of her eye it changes
Back to the open plain
Oh no she can’t explain
I cry out love keep your arms around me
I am a bird that’s in need of grounding
I’m built to fly away
I never learned how to stay
The night is gonna fall and the vultures will surround you
And when you’re looking in the mirror what you see is gonna astound you
But all these lines and greys refine, They are the maps of our design
Of what began on a Monday morning
Monday Morning
The night is gonna fall and the vultures will surround you
And when you’re looking in the mirror what you see is gonna astound you
But all these lines and greys refine, They are the maps of our design
Of what began on a Monday morning
The night is gonna fall and the vultures will surround you
And when you’re looking in the mirror what you see is gonna astound you
And while the glow of youth in time eludes
It’s burning on inside of you It all began on a Monday morning
And modern music it ain’t to her tastes
She loves the natural light
Captured in black and white
Within the blink of her eye it changes
Back to the open plain
Oh no she can’t explain
I am a bird that’s in need of grounding
I’m built to fly away
I never learned how to stay
And when you’re looking in the mirror what you see is gonna astound you
But all these lines and greys refine, They are the maps of our design
Of what began on a Monday morning
And when you’re looking in the mirror what you see is gonna astound you
But all these lines and greys refine, They are the maps of our design
Of what began on a Monday morning

"She may be young but she only likes old things And modern music it ain’t to her tastes She loves the natural light Captured in black and white
She sees mirages of mountain ranges Within the blink of her eye it changes Back to the open plain Oh no she can’t explain"
Pretty simple, but extravagant and indescribable at the same time. This is just a scratch on the surface of his perception of love.
"I cry out love keep your arms around me I am a bird that’s in need of grounding I’m built to fly away I never learned how to stay"
Another self-explanation. It's not hard to interpret, but to truly describe and understand the concept behind this is impossible.
"The night is gonna fall and the vultures will surround you"
Probably a metaphor for those times we stay up at night thinking about life and how far we've come. I'm sure everyone can relate to this.
"And when you’re looking in the mirror what you see is gonna astound you"
Getting older, noticing different features, etc.
"But all these lines and greys refine, They are the maps of our design Of what began on a Monday morning"
He seems pretty keen on the idea that life and humans are essentially genetics. Our bodies progress and our minds learn based on different branches of our DNA doing different things. As far as "Monday Morning" I'm guessing he is using this to represent the start of all things, as that is when the week starts, on Monday.
I'm not entirely sure as to why the song shifted gears from talking about love to genetics/evolution, but I'm almost certain he is saying we should appreciate the people we meet given that they became people we know and love and it is absolutely fascinating, the chances of finding someone who so complements and benefits your own genetic "map".
What a beautiful description of a beautiful song. Thank you, HandForTender

This is just plainly about growing old, but being OK with it.. "all these lines and greys refine," getting better with age, "they are the maps of our design," we're designed to grow old. And I also think something happy happened to him on a Monday morning, maybe finally meeting that significant other that grounds him, and being so captured by her and her qualities that she makes him see the better of himself -- the things that don't fade, but get better with time, like knowing yourself and your heart. It makes me so happy.
"And while the glow of youth in time eludes It’s burning on inside of you It all began on a Monday morning"
...even though seeing himself age, seemingly very quickly, he still feels all the best qualities of youth deep inside of him/his soul. I love it! Favorite song on the new album...
My interpretation is as such... This song is about the whole universe, which began on a monday morning, according to some religions. It is about the massive size of the universe compared to our short lifetimes. "She sees mirages of mountain ranges, within the blink of an eye it changes."
"The night is gonna fall and the vultures will surround you" - You will die and be recycled
"Looking in the mirror what you see is gonna astound you" - Everything in the universe is one and unified, so when we look at the world we are looking in the mirror. He could be referring to real life or some sort of energetic afterlife where we take a step back and understand everything.
"They are the maps of our design" - Since we are all one universe, including the rocks and trees and birds and bees, everything shares the same patterns within the mechanisms that support life. Fibionacci shit.

I cry out "Love keep your arms around me," I am a bird that's in need of grounding, I'm built to fly away, I never learned to stay.
The night is going to fall and the vultures will surround you, And when you're looking in the mirror what you see is going to astound you, But all these lines and greys refined, They are the maps of our design, of what began on monday morning.
Monday morning. Monday morning. Oh, Oh. Monday morning. Monday morning. Oh, Oh.
The night is going to fall and the vultures will surround you, And when you're looking in the mirror what you see is going to astound you, But all these lines and greys refined, They are the maps of our design, of what began on monday morning.
Oh yes the night is going to fall and the vultures will surround you, And when you're looking in the mirror what you see is going to astound you, and while the glow of youth in time we lose, Is burning on inside of you, It all began on monday morning.
Monday morning. Monday morning. Oh, Oh.
Small correction, should be "I never learned HOW to stay..."

Also it should be "began on A monday morning" for the choruses..

I just added my corrected lyrics.
Notice that the chorus changes the last time around 3:28 of the song. This is the only part that I'm not 100% sure of, but I've listened to it mutliple times, this sounds better than all the stuff I've been finding for it, and it makes sense. Please correct me on this line if you have a better idea, but I think what I got it pretty close to it....
Great song!
thanks for the help, I just got the official lyrics off the album jacket, so I'll just copy paste them in and they should be good..i hope

The first time I heard this song, I knew exactly who and what this song was about. Growing old with Zooey Deschanel. :)
Totally, this song and the Open Door EP, that's all Zooey

this has nothing to do with the lyrics, but the melody of this song is really similar to Surfer Blood's "I'm Not Ready" well, i like both songs though, so it's okay :) and i'm sure it's just an unintentional coincidence
Well, first, these lyrics need correcting. "the night is gonna fall" not "and i just gonna fall." and "when you're looking in the mirror" not "your look in the mirror."
As far as meaning, the lyrics seem to point to creation science.
thanks for the input, one point though, when quoting, please quote words as they are written, as per the intention of quotations.

Do you honestly think that any part of these lyrics point to creation science? Just because there is a mention of "design" in there? Or "Monday"? I really don't think it's the Monday in the biblical sense, I think it's just a reference to a begnning of your life, love, relationship or whatever. As far as I know, Ben is an atheist or at least a rational guy, surely not a believer in stuff like creationism. Besides, listen to "St. Peter's Cathedral" or "I will follow you into the dark". Does he really seem to you like a religious person?...

For me, it's just a private song about his lovely wife (he said it in an interview on Morning Edition) and how he needs her to remain grounded, because otherwise he would fail at life.
Nothing to do with creation science, critical or otherwise.

I have to agree, I think that any theory that this song is about creation science is over the top. I think that this song is pretty litteral in meaning. In fact, my theory is just that Ben Gibbard and Zooey Deschanel met on a Monday morning.

The chorus is about growing old, about time passing.... looking in the mirror and time has passed. And yet the "lines" (wrinkles) and "greys refined" (grey hairs) are fine because age has and will allow their relationship (that "began on Monday morning") to grow.
The last chorus is a bit of an ode to Zooey, that even though time will take a toll on her body, Ben will always see youth/beauty in her...
@capo51 The first thing I thought of was creation science when I heard this song. If you're talking life and death, then mention the map of your design. How else would the design happen? The design had to be created.

Yes, I thought it was weird becuase Ben is basically an athiest.

And Monday morning even furthers the argument as that's when the world was created according to the Bible.
