Two Notes and A Beat Lyrics
all I really need are two notes and a beat
oh last night I dreamt a magnificent thing
I held you close I heard you sing
your voice was what I’d always wanted in a woman
I know you say he’s good to you and I’m sure he is
but darling he’s all you’ll ever know
unless you trust your heart and let yourself grow
if your skin was the ocean I’d sprint to your shore
I’d wade in your shallows, alleviate my core
if you hair was the fir tree all hollow inside
with peace I would slumber
gripping this pen
cliff over water
envisioning drums in rhythmic salute
poetry craftwork is tough I won’t bother
but pull simple rhymes from the dirt
who’d refute?
all I really need are two notes and a beat
all I really need are two notes and a beat
to sing to you my heart it’s a great place to start
D to a G
swift as a bird
muscles remembering artless, absurd
and modest attempts at creating a mood
with these thin metal strings my affection construe
gripping this pen
cliff over water
envisioning drums
poetry craftwork is tough I won’t bother
but pull simple rhymes...
all I really need are two notes and a beat
all I really need are two notes and a beat

This song is about unrequited love. The speaker believes his love interest is with a crappy guy who doesn't treat her well or respect her. I imagine this guy is the jock type, big muscles, big head, handsome, etc. but he lacks substance. It seems to me that the speaker may be intimidated to physically fight for the girl he loves, he doesn't have the good looks or status that the other guy has. But he does have something more important: his songs.
Maybe he also isn't really confident in his ability to write fantastic poetry or catchy songs. But he tells himself that it doesn't have to be a super complex ballad with clever lyrics. It can be a straightforward song, two notes and a beat. This song pumps him up to express this true feelings through music.
Starting with something simple, the lyrics start to flow and he actually ends up with some beautiful words, and it all started with those two notes and a beat.
In my interpretation, the guy sings his song to the girl he likes, and she ends up leaving the douchebag guy.
