Kamikaze

Personally, I think this song has a lot of layers to it.

I'm fairly sure the first part is about Eve, but I'm not sure about all the individual symbols.

The princess in her flower bed - Eve in the garden Pulled the jungle underground - ? I think this might be the disruption of the peace and harmony in the garden leading it to be sealed off (Genesis 3:24) Cherry bombs stain blackbirds red - Red represents blood, I think birds represent people in this case (might be a little far fetched, but we'll get to that a little later on). Either, this reflects the passage from Romans that says "the wages for sin is death", or it could be the atonement of Christ's death and resurrection (painting all humankind red with his blood). Explosions never make a sound - no Doctor Who fans around? this could pertain to two of history's three most defining, shattering--exploding--moments (in the Christian tradition); either the entry of sin into the world or the crucifixion/resurrection. I'm guessing, both.

The chorus I think is probably a tie with the rest of the album, as well as talking about, I think, the Holy Spirit guiding him through everyday life. Helping him do everything "as unto God" ("come down/Kamikaze over me/and I come alive/my midnight melody").

Second verse is definitely Revelation. AlligatorSky covered that. "He'll find me fighting back a terrible force/'Cause I'm not afraid to die alone" - also a tie in with the chorus. Through the Holy Spirit's help we can be bold and courageous, not be 'afraid to die alone'. AY's talking about how he wants to stand up for who he believes in and finish the race well.

This brings us to the final part. Not sure what all the references mean, but I did a quick scripture search for 'ember glow', and one of the two I found (the other was Proverbs) was this verse: "For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like glowing embers." (Psalm 102:3) And a couple verses further down, verses 6 and 7, there's this: "I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins. I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof." I really think this must be one of Adam's favourite passages. It talks about insomnia, and owls, and glowing ember, and quite many of the topics he covers. Might be worth a thought, anyway. He's certainly brilliant enough to incorporate it.

I think Owl City might have the finest Christian lyrics I've seen in a long time. LONG time.

Adam talks about the meaning of this song on a "track by track" video on YouTube. He said it's about what he's fighting for spiritually. I dug a little deeper and I find that each of the verses are taken from the beginning and end of the Bible. The first is about Genesis–primarily about Eve taking the apple from the tree.

The second verse is clearly about Revelation. Revelation 19:11 says:

"I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. "

I think it's really interesting how Adam is incorporating his faith into his music even more. It's very inspiring!

I couldn't figure out what he said at the part after "to save my life" and I thought it was "ember-glow" like a fire, but either way. :)
This is by far my favorite off the new album, because it's such a departure from his previous work, both musically and lyrically. I love the hopeful outlook he has for life after death and it just makes me happy to listen to, also because he's so unashamed of his faith.

I think its "Bring in the Emberglo!"

Emberglo was the name of a paint finish for the 1966 Ford Mustang. So it kinda makes more sense.

Oh and also, these lyrics rock because they are so accurate!

I totally agree with Kjersti454 's translation. I know that Adam has said that this an extremely spiritual song for him. I have been trying to decode it for a while and this pretty much matched what I came up with. I know he is right. Their is a war going on. I can't see it. No one can. It is a war for souls. Satan doesn't want people to go to heaven and he is doing everything he can to deceive people and keep them out of heaven. This war has a point. God is fighting for our souls. He loves us and wants to spend eternity with us because we are His people. In the end I know that God will triumph. For now all we can do is fight for HIm.

Is it sad this song made me think of Doctor Who?? I was seriously convinced that was what the song was about, quite possibly because there are religious metaphors in Doctor Who. For example, the captain, or the Doctor, riding in on his "horse" (TARDIS) to save the day. It doesn't help that A) the entire CD's about galaxies and stars and the universe, and B) there's a TARDIS sound effect in the song XD. Guess that's just me though.

Oh, and I forgot. Haha. This song is probably mainly about purpose and motivation and, at least partially, about exhaustion.

When he said the cherry bombs stain the blackbird red, I've always been thinking that it came to be a red-winged blackbird...?
