Angels Lyrics

Wake me if you're out there
Through the glass in my bedroom window,
In the bushes far below,
I thought I saw an unfamiliar shadow,

Among the ones I so clearly know.
I've been sleeping with the nightlight unplugged,
With a note on the rocking chair,
That says I'm dreaming of the life I once loved,

So wake me if you're out there.
Living close to the ground,
It's seventh heaven because there are angels all around,
Among my frivolous thoughts,

I believe there are beautiful things seen by the astronauts.
So wake me if you're out there
Wake me if you're out there
In the dust on my cellar staircase,

A pair of footprints followed me,
I saw a flicker in the fake fireplace,
Blinked again, but there was nothing to see.
I've been leaving all the windows unlocked,

With a basket by the oak tree,
'Cause I'll be picking up the acorns that fall off,
If you'll be climbing up to meet me.
Living close to the ground!

It's seventh heaven because there are angels all around,
Among my frivolous thoughts,
I believe there are beautiful things seen by the astronauts.
So wake me if you're out there!

I keep my knees black and blue 'cause they often hit the hardwood floor,
(Wake me if you're out there),
And I believe, so I'm not praying to the ceiling anymore,
I've been sleeping with the nightlight unplugged,

With a note on the rocking chair that says I'm dreaming of the life I once loved,
So wake me if you're out there.
Living close to the ground!
It's seventh heaven 'cause there are angels all around,

Among my frivolous thoughts,
I believe there are beautiful things seen by the astronauts
The indications reveal,
(Wake me if you're out there),

That few of us realize life is quite so real,
So if you're dying to see,
I guarantee there are angels around your vicinity
So if you're dying to see,

I guarantee there are angels around your vicinity

This song really speaks to me. It is just... beautiful. "...livin' close to the ground is 7th heaven 'cause there are Angles all around..." just beautiful. Before I ever heard this song I was afraid of deamons and ghosts and evil spirts, but this song made me feel protected, that I will never be harmed. "...that few of us realize life is quite surreal..." that also means a lot to me, you know it's people who don't care about what life really is. and, "...I believe there are beautiful things by the astronauts..." They make me jealous, no joke. They get to see just astonishing things in the universe. That is what I wanna be. No joke. An astronaut. <3Love you Adam<3. You inspire me more and more everyday...

Even if I'm not religious, this song speaks to me. Not that we are blessed with angels and stuff like that, but that life is beautiful... that "angels" are all around. Adam is almost certainly one of them...

Though this song sounds whimsical and reverent, further research has proven it is anything but. This song is, in fact, about Doctor Who, specifically the Weeping Angels. Of course, there are some hopeful lines, but not many. "Wake me if you're out there!" A constant plea for the Doctor to come and save him from the clutches of the Angels. "Through the glass in my bedroom window In the bushes far below I thought I saw an unfamiliar shadow Among the ones I so clearly know." Since the Angel was concealed by the darkness, it was free to move, then froze as the singer, obviously terrified, noticed the movement.

"I've been sleeping with the nightlight unplugged With a note on the rocking chair That says I'm dreaming of the life I once loved So wake me if you're out there." The angels grow stronger by feeding on energy so he's taking away that source of energy, while again pleading that somehow the Doctor can come and save him.

"Living close to the ground Is seventh heaven cause there are angels all around." This line is sarcastic and ironic, basically calling this horror of existence wonderful.

"Among my frivolous thoughts I believe there are beautiful things seen by the astronauts So wake me if you're out there!" A reference to the Doctor again, daydreaming about a world away from his home. He probably wishes he could travel with the Doctor.

"In the dust on my cellar staircase A pair of footprints followed me I saw a flicker in the fake fireplace Blinked again but there was nothing to see." More about how the angels plague him.

"I've been leaving all the windows unlocked With a basket by the oak tree Cause I'll be picking up the acorns that fall off If you'll be climbing up to meet me." Now the singer busies himself by preparing for when the Doctor comes, setting up a way to see if the TARDIS disturbed anything outside.

"I keep my knees black and blue cause they often hit the hardwood floor And I believe so I'm not praying to the ceiling anymore." Even though he's quickly losing faith, he still hopes and dreams that somehow the Doctor can hear his pleas for help.

"The indications reveal That few of us realize life is quite surreal." Nobody really believes in the Doctor but him, and most people think he's crazy for all his precautions against the Weeping Angels.

"So if you're dying to see, I guarantee there are angels around your vicinity." Now he asks them to just notice the abundance of angel statues, pointing out that there's something wrong with them.

Congratz if you made it all the way down here! I commend you for your ability to learn the dark truth behind this beautiful song.

My Interpretation

Interesting take on the song. Never thought about it that way before. Sadly, we don't know for sure if Adam is a Doctor Who fan... :(

SORRY ABOUT FLAGGING THE PERSON UNDER ME THAT WAS A COMPLETE ACCIDENT. However during Q&A's he doesnt get the references to DW so its safe to say he is not a whovian

It's so creepy when you think of it in Doctor Who context.

Adam Young himself says: "The song Angels is a bit of a spiritual, injected song. It says a lot about the fact, or kind of the idea, that there might be angels really around us. And the song talks about someone who is sort of seeing these surreal out of nowhere traces of what might be an angel. And playing to the fact that what if you could sort of pick a time and a place to meet up with one of them or somehow have contact with them. Just the idea of that by itself is interesting to me. And the idea of angels by itself.. It's like, you can't study them, you can't physically read about them. So they can be anything to anybody and that's an interesting way of looking at things."

Honestly I love the part where he says "Wake me if you're out there!"

It's sort of like seeing the beauty all around you, and the person in the song is trying to explain the beautiful things that happen to him through surreal beings, by trying to prove there are angels all around. My favorite line of the whole album: "The indications reveal / That few of us realize life is quite surreal". I love how he goes up to the next octave in the 2nd/3rd etc. chorus. :)

This song is a lot less about god and the angels you'd typically think of. The song is obviously about escapism, which Adam has said plays a major part in his life, just listen to ANY of his songs.

/I've been sleeping with the nightlight unplugged With a note on the rocking chair That says, "I'm dreaming of the life I once loved So wake me if you're out there"/

He doesn't need the light, because he's safe in his imagination

/Living close to the ground is seventh heaven 'cause there are angels all around Among my frivolous thoughts, I believe there are beautiful things seen by the astronauts/

There are more beautiful things seen in space, which is referring to people who "have their head in the clouds"

/In the dust on my cellar staircase, A pair of footprints followed me I saw a flicker in the fake fireplace Blinked again but there was nothing to see/

He can't help but notice things that aren't real (Starting to look like some sort of disorder)

/I keep my knees black and blue 'cause they often hit the hardwood floor (Wake me if you're out there) And I believe, so I'm not praying to the ceiling anymore/

He keeps his knees black and blue and prays to the ceiling. Kinda seems like a stab AGAINST religion, huh?

/The indications reveal (Wake me if you're out there) That few of us realize life is quite surreal So if you're dying to see, I guarantee there are angels around your vicinity/

I see the angels he's speaking of, in the sense of this song, more to be a guiding influence.

/Wake me if you're out there!/

More of the surreal/escapism, calling out for a guiding influence.

This is one of my favorite songs by Owl City, I melt a little each time he screams "Wake me if you're out there!"

The part where he says "I BELIEVE so I'm not praying to the ceiling anymore" is not against religion. He's sayingthat he has found God, (hence the "I believe" part) so he's not praying to something "imaginary" or just "the ceiling" anymore. And he "keeps his knees black and blue" because he falls to the ground to pray. :)

I just wanted to say what hbhbhb90 said and I completely agree with him/her! ^ - ^

"A stabb against religion" ? Dude he's literally a Cristian

All of Adam's songs are really dreamy and beautiful and they're about some cute things such as "angels". They let me forget my troubles and sorrows for a while. And that's why Owl City always make me happy! <333
