Plant Life Lyrics
I saw a ghost on the stairs
And sheets on the tables and chairs
The silverware swam with the sharks in the sink
Even so, I don't know what to think
I've been longing for daisies to push through the floor
And I wish plant life would grow all around me
So I won't feel dead anymore,
So I won't feel dead anymore
I saw a bear in the den reading my textbooks again
The bats flowed like traffic as they poured from the attic
Heaven knows I could really use a friend
I'd rather waltz than just walk through the forest
The trees keep the tempo and they sway in time
Quartet of crickets chime in for the chorus
If I were to pluck on your heartstrings, would you strum on mine?
I've been longing for daisys to push through the floor
(I've never really felt like this before)
And I wish plant life would grow all around me
So I won't feel dead anymore,
So I won't feel dead anymore
Your spirit is sweet, so pull off your sheet
And give me a ghost of a smile
Show me your teeth 'cause you're a teddy beneath
So just grin and bear it a while,
Just grin and bear it a while
I'd rather waltz than just walk through the forest
The trees keep the tempo and they sway in time
Quartet of crickets chime in for the chorus
If I were to pluck on your heartstrings, would you strum on mine?
The brook babbles on about nothing at all
A new leaf turns over, unwilling to fall
Tonight I'm busting out of this old haunted house
'Cause I'm sick of waiting for all those spider webs to grow all around me
'Cause I don't feel dead anymore
And I'm not afraid anymore
I'd rather waltz than just walk through the forest
The trees keep the tempo and they swing in time
Quartet of crickets chime in for the chorus

Sometimes, you feel like youre trapped in a haunted house, but that doesnt stop the world from being beautiful
This is my absolute favorite song."I'd rather waltz than just walk through the forest" That seems like a message for life, or something.
I love that it's in waltz time! Gives quite a different feel to the music.
Anyway I think the singer-character is a ghost (though perhaps he hasn't realised), as well as as the ghost-girl he's falling in love with. Other than that, it's not particularly deep, just surreal.
The chorus doesn't really fit lyrically with the rest of the song (since it doesn't seem to tie in with the haunted house theme), but it's probably my favourite part of it.
I think this song is saying that on the outside, the world is like a haunted house. But underneath, there's still beauty and wonder. Of course, Adam is implying it's because of religion. But it doesn't have to be
He's implying it's because of God, not religion. Trust me, HUGE difference.

Here we go with the debates. I'd rather waltz than try to get you to see my point.

Not a debate, just clarification. Go ahead and waltz, we'd probally all rather do that.

He finds joy in God. His religion worships God. His religion is Christianity. Ergo, he is in fact implying that the world is still beautiful because OF THE JOY HE FINDS IN HIS RELIGION.

Sam is right. "Religion" is nothing but an excuse for man to control his fellow man through power and judgment by a set of rules. "Christianity" should be the relationship of an individual with God. Yes, there's a huge difference between the two. It's easy to see when you know what true Christianity is.

I believe that the song is about old painful memories that he would just fade or be overtaken. Its about how people often live in the past and how he desires to live in the beauty of each moment. Instead of dwelling in the grimy parts of the past.
I saw a bear in the den. Reading my textbooks again. (Like:).dont know what it meant though
This song's really cute and beautiful! To me one of the greatest songs of Adam is this..<3
It's all about the fear that comes with being alone.
The meaning of this song is actually pretty deep and relatable. Adam explains in his blog http://www.ayoungblog.com/post/28350572229/plant-life check it out :)
Ok I think I got it now, "I'd rather waltz than just walk through the forest" basically meas YOLO because its saying you've only got one life, might as well do something interesting (waltzing) instead of just letting your life go by and staying mainstream (just walking through the forest) The forest being life and everyone else who lives in the mainstream. Great Job Adam :)
