I think this song is about a boy who is becomming older (maybe a teenager) and is sstarting to now wonder where his father is and why he left him. The song says, "It's been hell not having you here, I've been missing you so bad and you dont seem to care." Maybe the son has tried to contact his father but he won't listen and shakes him off. "Do you even miss us, your bottle's your mistress." His father is a drunk who probably left his family for alchohol. "Why are you walking away? Was it something I did, did I make a mistake?" He (Kellin) thinks its his fault his father left. "I don't understand, is this how it ends?" He thinks he will never see his father again and doesnt understand what he did wrong."Is this what you call a family? Spent seven years wishing that you'd draw the line, but i carry the thought along with you in my mind." He wishes his father would just say he wasn't comming back or he was, wishing he would make up his mind. At this point he doesn't know if he can even call it a family since part of it is missing. He always is thinking about the chance he may come back and they can truly be a family.

I believe this song was actually written about Katelynn's kids because they grew up without their father. But now Kellin is their father. This song is not written about Kellins "broken family". He did not grow up in a broken family. IT'S ABOUT KATELYNNS KIDS.

I wrote the song based on my vision towards not only my own father, but also in watching my step children's vision of their dad. It's easy to write off your feelings, you do it to continue on living. You pretend that it's just the way your life is, and there is nothing you can do to change it. When you have to watch someone else especially a child go through the same disappointments you went through, it's tough. It opened up a lot of feelings I haven't felt in a long time, and I really wanted to write about it

my dad did the same thing to me, and its been seven years since he left. funny how things work out. Anyway, this song really shows the self blame from a kids mind when dad leaves. it really catpures the feeling!

It's such a unique song compared to the rest of the songs they have produced about love between gf/bf kinda thing. I specifically love this line of the song "do you even miss us? your bottle's your mistress" It really hits those people who have alcoholic dads like I do.

For me, its from the prospective of a kid that his father walked out on, or left him at an early age. It troubles him and he wants to know why he had left.
