I've been listening to this song a bunch lately and I'm like pretty positive it says:

not are. You can hear that the word has a t at the end.
i agree with you i came to this website just to check the lyrics coz he says AREN'T not are
and "Can" instead of "When"
This song is about a boy and girl whom don't really match. Maybe their chemistry collides. Anyways, she is not perfect for him and he screws up occationally as well, but that's what makes them perfect. They have something special. Like a love/hate relationship.
