Don't Let Me Cave In Lyrics
You drove me all the way up here
Cause you could tell that I was a mess
I wasn't going to make it to dinner
I shouldn't be calling again
You drove me all the way back
I circled the airport a hundred times
And tried to hide the fact that I was crying
I came in on the red eye
And that's why I look like this
There comes a day when you rectify
Who you are with who you want to be with
I can't make the two things coexist
So don't let me cave in
You drove me all the way up here
Cause you could tell that I was a mess
I wasn't going to make it to dinner
I shouldn't be calling again
You drove me all the way up here
Then asked if we could stay in bed
Cause you got work early tomorrow
And I've got a plane to catch
You drove me all the way back
I spent last night getting Mexican
Outside a Logan Square basement show with Evan
Chicago looked desperate
But maybe that was me
I couldn't help thinking of watching the Sears Tower collapse as a kid
I feel like I might do the same thing
So don't let it happen to me
No, don't let it happen to me
You drove me all the way up here
Cause you could tell that I was a mess
I wasn't going to make it to dinner
I shouldn't be calling again
You drove me all the way up here
Then asked if we could stay in bed
Cause you got work early tomorrow
And I've got a plane to catch
You drove me all the way back
I tried to make a life in the midwest
But the Rust Belt keeps breaking promises
I can't seem to find out where my footing is
So don't let me cave in
You drove me all the way up here
Cause you could tell that I was a mess
I wasn't going to make it to dinner
I shouldn't be calling again

If you're going to capitalize Midwest, you should really capitalize Rust Belt, too. Haha. But not THAT important. That bridge that Matt sings is just epic. I find myself thinking about those lines a lot.
For anyone who doesn't understand the Sears Tower line, Soupy said it was about a tower that Sears had in Philly, not the actual Chicago Sears Tower. Obviously, there's a connection because he talks about Chicago, but yeah... They imploded it in the early 90s? I suppose.
Love the emotion in this song. The vocals sound nothing like the Upsides, and honestly, they sound BETTER. Soupy truly is the man.
I didn't even realize I messed up the capitalization, haha, but I fixed.

Also, thanks for explaining that Sears tower line.

"I spent last night getting Mexican Outside a Logan Square basement show with Evan"
A small little thing I noticed, but the Evan he's talking about here is Evan Weiss from Into It. Over It.
This is my favorite song off the new album after 3 listens through. I think I'm partial because I'm from Chicago though.
"Free to live anywhere in the world with no lease or real force tying me here, I thought about a few different places in the Midwest. I spent some time out there on tours or otherwise but it never seemed like it would work out. I've always felt like there was a connection between Philly and Chicago. The two cities just have similar dispositions, in my opinion. In Philly, we used to have a Sears building. It wasn't anywhere near as big as Chicago's Sears Tower, but it was there. At some point, they decided to demolish it via implosion. I remember watching it at my Grandpop's house on TV. One second there was a building. Then, a second later, it collapsed into a dust cloud. Every time I look at the Sears Tower in Chicago, I think about it."
I think it's about both really, it's about that special person in your life that never lets you down and is always there to catch you when you fall and when their not, you crack your head on the ground. it also has the Logan's circle reference, which i love. it is also about his depression, like, "Cos' you could tell that i was a mess, I wasn't gonna make it to dinner." he was in a mood and he just wanted to get away, but that guy drove him to that place and he knew he was so sad, he wouldn't get back to the band for dinner. i think it was Nick.
Hmm yea that does make sense lol thanks for that.

I went to warped and right before he sang this song he said it was about crowdsurfing and splitting his head open during a less than jake show. He was rushed to the hospital....I'm still confused as to how that matches the song lol

Funny, 4 years later he releases "I Don't Like Who I Was Then" which references that incident in the beginning of the song. Very cool.
