Skin Lyrics
Paint yourself a picture,
Of what you wish you looked like,
Maybe then they’ll just might,
Feel an ounce of your pain,
Come into focus,
Step out of the shadows,
It’s a losing battle,
There’s no need to be ashamed.
Cause they don’t even know you,
All they see is scars,
They don’t see the angel
Living in your heart.
Let them find the real you,
Buried deep within,
Let them know with all you’ve got,
That you are not your skin.
And when they start to judge you,
Show them your true colors,
And do unto others,
As you’d have done to you.
Just rise above this,
Kill them with your kindness,
Ignorance is blindness,
They’re the ones that stand to lose.
Cause they don’t even know you,
All they see is scars,
They don’t see the angel
Living in your heart.
Let them find the real you,
Buried deep within,
Let them know with all you’ve got,
That you are not your skin.
Well they don’t even know you,
All they see is scars,
And they don’t see the angels,
Living in your heart.
So let them find the real you,
Buried deep within,
Let them know with all you’ve got,
That you are not, you are not your skin.
Of what you wish you looked like,
Maybe then they’ll just might,
Feel an ounce of your pain,
Come into focus,
Step out of the shadows,
It’s a losing battle,
There’s no need to be ashamed.
All they see is scars,
They don’t see the angel
Living in your heart.
Let them find the real you,
Buried deep within,
Let them know with all you’ve got,
That you are not your skin.
Show them your true colors,
And do unto others,
As you’d have done to you.
Just rise above this,
Kill them with your kindness,
Ignorance is blindness,
They’re the ones that stand to lose.
All they see is scars,
They don’t see the angel
Living in your heart.
Let them find the real you,
Buried deep within,
Let them know with all you’ve got,
That you are not your skin.
All they see is scars,
And they don’t see the angels,
Living in your heart.
So let them find the real you,
Buried deep within,
Let them know with all you’ve got,
That you are not, you are not your skin.

I don't think it's just about not hearing what others says about you.
The thing is, I believe this song is dedicated to people with physical and/or mental disabilities, that's why it has lines such as:
"Paint yourself a picture, Of what you wish you looked like," "All they see is scars" "you are not your skin."
It's all refering to things of the exterior. And think, picture someone in a wheelchair, losing a limb, or with severe burns. Sadly, when some people encounter them, their disabilities is usually all they see and judge them all around them. This song is to raise the spirits of those who can't avoid this, and remember them, and hopefully more people, to see beyond the exterior.
I really like your thoughts on this song. i dont think i would have ever thought of it that way. But now that i think about it, that makes alot of sense.

I feel like this is a song about someone who throughout all of their life they have something that causes them to have a bad life.(like being mad fun of by people) and I feel like this thing is something that causes them to become a "cutter" because "all they see is scars, and you are not your skin" and i think people find out about her cutting, and then they judge her greatly because they think she is trying to kill herself when that really isnt want she was trying to do. she was more going for like....being about to quiet the voices of those making her life so unbearable.
This album is so AMAZING! I love The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack, it too, is AMAZING, but this one really hits home for me
But anyway, the song is self explanatory to me, it's about taking shit from people who don't know you, and not letting it get to you, because you know they don't know who you are, so it doesn't matter what the say or think. They can judge you all they want, but in the end, they're just ignorant. "I'm rubber, you're glue, whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you". I think that really goes with the song
Alexlayer is right. I read an interview with DJ Ashba online and he said that James Michael saw a thing on the news about a girl named Amy who lost both of her legs in a tragic skiing accident and he just got so emotionally wrapped up in her story that he sat down and wrote this song about her. Then he sent it to Nikki and DJ and they both loved it and said it had to go on the album. I can semi-relate to this song, I mean, I don't have any physical or mental handicaps but I am used to people judging me without even getting to know me. This songs makes me teary-eyed literally every time I listen to it...
I think the song means that no matter what you look like its whats inside that matters, "Paint yourself a picture Of what you wish you looked like" to me that means that if you self harm and have scars from that or have a physical or mental disability that stuff makes you different and people judge you for that. "you are not your skin" again saying its whats in side that matters not the way you look. hope that helped :)
I'm not saying this is the intended purpose of the song (as all good forms of art are made to influence each individual in their own way) But when I first heard these lyrics it immediately made me think of some of my friends who identify as transgender, because like the lyrics state, who they are is not defined by their "skin" or body. The lyrics just seem to encompass a universal sense of what's on the inside is what matters, not how the world places you. It makes me think of my friends and the LGBT community because on some level we have all experienced judgment based on the norms of society and felt the need to break free from them, even when people fixate on one aspect such as an identity, what really matters is who you are as a person and the rest doesn't matter.
So, I just heard this song for the first time yesterday and I immediately added it to all my playlists. It is literally the only song that can make me sob. I think for every person this song has a different meaning. But for me, it struck a chord in me because of my self harm disorder. This song sounds like it talking completely of self harm. So many people think that self harmers are crazy and shameful, but I am very nice and caring and it hurts that people's assumptions think I am not. That is what this song is saying. I'm my own person, my cuts and scars DO NOT determine who I am. Had to share my thoughts on this. Thank you. Thank you sixx:a.m. For this song.. It means so much to me..
This to me seems like it's about people with a variety of things varying from their looks to actual learning disabilities and how there's always people out there that will bully you on the way you look or act, which I can relate to seen as I've been suffering from memory problems & learning disabilities since I was born and I've been through bullying like the majority of us do at some point in our lives so when I heard this, I immediately fell in love with it. You know a artist is decent when they produce meaningful songs like this. I believe every artist should produce at least one song like this that most people if not everyone can relate to in so many ways.:')
I believe this song is about depression and self-harming. Some say it's about those with disability, but I have reasons to believe otherwise. "Paint yourself a picture Of what you wish you looked like Maybe then they just might Feel an ounce of your pain" So, first of all, the line paint yourself a picture of what you wish you looked like... Well, people with depression aren't happy with how they look, are they? (apologies for how this is poorly explained by the way). And then there's maybe then they just might feel an ounce of your pain... Because if they saw how someone wished they weren't like this, that they were better, they'd have to feel some element of sympathy, wouldn't they? And realise the pain of feeling like that, the pain of having depression?
"Come into focus Step out of the shadows It's a losing battle There's no need to be ashamed" Come into focus, step out of the shadows - you don't have to hide anymore. It's okay. It's a losing battle there's no need to be ashamed - yes, you're going to lose, but you don't have to be ashamed.
"'cause they don't even know you All they see is scars They don't see the angel Living in your heart" So... These people are judging from what they see. They see the scars on your body from self-harming and immediately make judgements. But you don't cut because you're a bad person, you cut because you're feeling so down. They don't see the angel living in your heart, they don't see how kind you are on the inside, if only you had the strength to show them!
"Let them find the real you buried deep within let them know with all you've got that you are not your skin" Let them find what you're really like on the inside, hidden in your heart. Let them find out that you are not your skin? You are not an aggressive person who cuts, you are a person who has come to no other choice, it's not your fault.
