Can we ever get rid of the whats and the ifs
That doubts that exist in our minds
In the silence I am tricked into thinking you'll forget
And I'll be stranded like a man in a mine
The day between the soil and the sky
An emptiness, a void, a heaviness, a sigh,
But I know you will make through alive
Cause you never said goodbye
Like a city besieged, it was the loneliest thing
Your silence held in cold delay
And I felt faint of heart cause I was caught between
The weight of everything I couldn't say
The day between the soil and the sky
An emptiness, a void, a heaviness, a sigh,
But I know you will make through alive
Cause you never said goodbye
I don't know, I don't know, I don't know
How to follow, to follow, to follow,
Cause you and I know I can't go, I can't go
Between the gallows and the gates
The day between the soil and the sky
An emptiness, a void, a heaviness, a sigh,
But I know you will make through the night
Cause you never said goodbye
That doubts that exist in our minds
In the silence I am tricked into thinking you'll forget
And I'll be stranded like a man in a mine
An emptiness, a void, a heaviness, a sigh,
But I know you will make through alive
Cause you never said goodbye
Your silence held in cold delay
And I felt faint of heart cause I was caught between
The weight of everything I couldn't say

Cause you never said goodbye
How to follow, to follow, to follow,
Cause you and I know I can't go, I can't go
Between the gallows and the gates
An emptiness, a void, a heaviness, a sigh,
But I know you will make through the night
Cause you never said goodbye

I don't understand. "I know you will make it through alive, cause you never said goodbye." Is said person strong because they don't sound weak by saying a simple goodbye? I hope this makes sense; I really need to go to bed.
I'm not sure about this, but what I understand in this verse "I know you will make it through alive, cause you never said goodbye." is like the artist is trying to say 'At least before you die you need to say goodbye because if you don’t then you have to come back' I mean she or he, or the person to whom is adressed can't go away or die just like that, she has to survive for the sake of the other.

To me this song means someone saying a final goodbye to a loved one about to die. It can also be a goodbye from the person who is dieing and leaving loved ones behind. But everyone has there own meanings to songs as this one reminds me of my nan
I want to say that maybe the first verse sounds as if he's speaking about God. Forget whether or not it's true that He exists because right now He is needed so the person he loves doesn't die and leave him alone.
Basically, it sounds as if the person the lyrics speak of was suddenly in a medical crisis. For example: comatose.
He (or she) didn't get the chance to say everything they wanted to say before their person went into this state of inbetween life or death.
It's basically a waiting game if they will survive or not but he's telling himself they will because they never even said goodbye.
Ah, if only life was that fair. Hope whoever this was about pulled through.
